Camper on a 88 2500

Looking for some input. I bought a 88 GMC 2500 with 5.7L. Vin indicates 8000GVW. A tag in the glove box states that payload capacity is 1020 lbs. If that is correct then I will not be able to carry much of a camper. I understand that most campers made in the last 5 years tend to be quite heavy. I'm looking at something in the 1997 range that is around 860 KG / 1890 LBS. Still to heavy if I follow the glove box sticker.
Interested in hearing your experiences with this truck.
