Firewall markings help!!

I am going to put the markings back on the firewall of my project truck, and I have gotten everything figured out except for a couple areas. This is for a 72 and it is the outside markings on the firewall and in the very center behind the engine(see pic)

It is the 4T markings that I am not sure about. I have seen some that read
2T and some dont have any thing there. And sometimes it is backwards and say T4 which is not really important, but I have seen it. I can find no Rime or rhythm to this. I have seen both both on swb, lwb, BB, SB, fleets, steps on so on. I thought if might be the paint scheme, but that is not the case either. Any ideas what this actually stand for????

The second area is the 3-digit # behind the engine. I don't think I have ever seen the same 3 #'s on any truck.

Thanks .......Jason

Re: Firewall markings help!!

Hi Jason

The 2 T or 4 T is the paint option i.e. 2 tone roof color/ bottom color and 4 T was the deluxe two tone, hence the top color(roof)/upper body color (hood and above upper mouldings)/ middle(insert color)/ then the lower color (below moulding) .

I'm not sure what your referring to about the center cowl section # as I can't remember seeing that.

Mark

I`ll check my cabs.I`m not sure if they have the number in the center. If you see they are always different they may be the line #.

Re: Firewall markings help!!

Mark,

That was my first guess, but I have two and have seen several more factory 4-way paint jobs that have the 2T on them. Plus the marks were put on their after painting so I didn't think the workers would need those marks to see what kind of paint the truck was to get. Im am still confused!!!!

S-K, Here are a couple pics. I have never seen the same 3-digits on any two trucks. I guess I could just make up a 3 digit # if that is the case

Re: Firewall markings help!!

I had always thought the 2T and 4 T on each edge of the firewall was for the line workers to identify the mouldings for their sides of the truck rolling down the line. Remember the truck front clip was painted and assembled away from the rest of the body and came together on the line. As far as paint and mouldings you have to refer to the spid label as it was built. A lot of two tones and mouldings were dealer done or owner modified. That is what I have seen consistant with Chevrolet trucks from 58's through 87's. I had even painted two new trucks of my own on a 85 and a 87 on the rear of the exposed box floor because the factory two tone only did the lower boxsides and below the tailgate moulding. That area above the bumper looked like a jagged eyesore fromt the back.

Re: Firewall markings help!!

Well, I AM AS CONFUSED AS A BABY RACCOON.

This spid is for the 1st 2 pics in post # 4 ( 1st bronze truck).

It list both upper and lower moldings ( belt and bodyside) and the paint as

white/med bronze/white/med bronze ( if there was room to type it out).

So shouldn't it be a 4T?

What am I missing? ......Jason

Re: Firewall markings help!!

On a Custom Deluxe it would not have came standard with either a belt or upper moulding and that was required with the deluxe two tone. So that is why they are listed out as options. I still believe the 2T and 4 T is the paint reference with mouldings as I can remember somewhere in my truck data books the referal to 2T and 4 T paint schemes. I would suggest a grease pencil error on a Monday morning but I'm open to a new meaning of the 2T and 4T.

Re: Firewall markings help!!

Well, you DA MAN, so I think I will go that way. My truck will be red with a white top so i think i will go with a 2T. I am still a ways out yet so if you come across it in your data book let me know.....Jason

Re: Firewall markings help!!

That will be one sharp color combo and one rarely seen. Not to highjack this but along the same paint line question... Ever see a painted upper stripe option code on the firewall listed? Had to be done on the line after the front clip was installed just to get the dual line match up.

Re: Firewall markings help!!

No, but I have a couple painted stripe trucks that I can see if I can figure anything out.
