Help with 12 Bolt Numbers

I need help figuring out what 12 bolt I have.

The numbers on the axle tube are WE 11 12
right axle tube facing front of truck center section is 3838227
left side center section facing front is GM 5

I am doing conversion to 5 lug and need to make sure the parts will work. Thanks.

Also what is the outside diameter of a stock 67 driveshaft?

I don't know what those numbers all stand for, but I do know that the 66 has the same axle as 67 and that the length is 30 5/8". And that is for the half ton, which I'm assuming yours is.

as far as I am aware... a 12 bolt is a 12 bolt. The different factors aregoing to be if it is a big bearing heavy car rear end or standard ( probably) and ring gear size... thats it... there are also a few odd C-clip eliminated 12 bolts that if I remember right were used in some of the pontiacs, buicks... So all you need to know is axle length, spline count and ring gear size.

The car 12 bolt is verydifferent from the truck 12 bolt. The truck version has a vertical rib inthe cover and was used from 64-early 80's. There are some differences in the overall width and of couse the shock/trailing arm/spring mounts.

Car and truck are very different in ring and pinion shape and then the truck ones changed size in the 1970's and were .75" wider on each side, so 1.5" wider overall.

Here are a couple of pics of the rearend in my son's 67. From the pictures I have seen on here I have not seen the type of bracket that is on the passenger side for the trackbar mount. The bar on it now is 27 and a half inches center to center. The drive shaft diameter is so big ( did not measure ) that the crossmember was hacked out for clearance. Thanks for your time. Just to let you know that is not my paint job on the rearend. LOL

That makes me wonder if that might have been a car one that was used. Its 5 lug right? 5x5? Just wondering about those details. Also, I know my 78 chevy 12 bolt has a notch on the pumpkin where the panhard bar mount on the early one is. Can't tell if that one has it for sure, but looks like it doesn't so that's why I wonder if it was originally a car one.

Edit: I do think that it will work. Unless they changed the yoke to an aftermarket larger one, then I think your all good with using it with stock driveshaft. Just make sure that width is very close, my 78 12 bolt is 1.5" wider than the early one, but still fits within the wheel wells.

It is a 6 lug axle right now. Waiting on 5 lug axles from ECE. I will have to pull an axle to see what the length is to make sure new axles will work. It is not wider than stock, because the tires the PO put on it rubbed on the inner fenders. The tires are 275/60/15.

All they need to know is how many splines and how long the axle is from the outside of the flange to the end of the axle. I order axles from Moser all the time, and thats all the info they need. $275.00 a pair and you have them in 3-4 days !

moose - That is a 12 bolt truck axle, but I think that it might be from a 64 model. I know 100% that the 65 model year had the panhard bar connected to the cast in boss on the center section like shown in kizer's pictures. I believe that the 63-64 models had the bracket welded to the axle tube.

For your new axles, I would take the time to pull off the brake drum, pull the cover, remove the center pin, pull the c-clip and slide out the axle. Measure it and count the splines like crawdadfox said. That way you know for sure what length/spline you have in the rear...

I think it is a 63 rearend. The numbers by the cover plate look like C K 1 3. I think thats what it is. So my next question is what is the spline count and length of a 1963 12 bolt axle? Thanks for all your help with figuring this out.

You could just pull the C-clips out and pull the axle out and do some measuring and some counting. I've not pulled a 12bolt axle before, but if its like a Dana35 its pretty easy. Here is a writeup I did on a disc brake conversion for my Jeep and I'd assume its probably pretty close, but I haven't really looked to be honest.

I know for sure the axle shaft on my Jeep is longer on passenger side than the drivers so I'd guess that there could be a possibility that both should be measured just to make sure. I'd probably pull the axle and put the end that goes into the diff on the ground and pull a tape straight up to the top of the axle flange where the studs are poking through and use that as a measurement and of course share that measurement with whomever your buying axles from.

Somebody else might have the answers, but I've learned tinkering with my Jeep that sometimes you just have to do things on your own and heck while your pulling axles you could just change the lube since you have the cover off anyways.
