I removed my steering box for replacement, BUT, is there a way to test it BEFORE I fork-out 185.00 for a new one ?

I don't know the answer to your qeustion, but the $185, is that for a manual or power steering box?

$185 sounds about right - that's what they quoted me at Autozone.

Dumb question - if you don't know if it needs replacement, why did you remove it?

If it's leaking, you can buy seal kits.

If your steering is sloppy, there are a multitude of other parts that are more likely - rag joint, balljoints, tie rod ends, drag link ends.

Sorry, I don't know of any way to test a steering box.

Well, now THERE is a question.... I guess I approached this thing as a "sit it in the garage and throw money at it" project !!!!

Been through the rag joints, tie rod ends, and wheel bearings.

After readin these responses, andother postings on this board, I am bolting the thing back on and going after the u-joints.

A couple of people have mentioned that because of WHAT it is doing, (drifting one way, then the other) it is likely u-joints....

Wish me luck !!

p.s. It is 4x4 w/ 4" lift. THERE ! That's the problem !! LOL

I was going to post this pic in my xover steering thread. Its how I want to tighten up my steering. Its racecar parts from coleman. About $125 for the u-joints and rod. Its a van tilt wheel.

You might check a hydraulics shop. Some shops that work on HD trucks have the ability to bench test steering sectors.
