two terms:
Lug centric, most aftermarket wheels are made this way. The wheel centers on the lug studs.

Hub centric, the wheel centers on the center hub.

If a wheel is hub centric ( all OE wheels are ) when you loosen the lug nuts, the wheel will typically tilt, or fall off of the centering hub.

Lug centric wheels, when the lug nuts are loosened will just drop a bit and stay in place.

The prefered choice is the OE way. HUB CENTRIC. A truer centering of the wheel to the hub, and a better ride, and load capabilities. Some, but not all wheel manufacturers will offer centering rings for their lug centric wheels, making them hub centric
