Re: 99 silverado question
Legally No, you are not suppose to alter speedometers.
I have seen folks run drills on them in the old days, but not sure something like that will work for the new design, especially digital ones. I would image there is a way thru the computer, but far as I know even if you change the speedo out, the computer will keep track of the total miles on the system.

Just remember, any dealer service, dealer repairs, recall repairs, new registration, accident, etc will show mileage on a carfax. Personally, I wouldn't do it, the rest of the truck still has 150K of wear and tear on it. I bought an S-10 tachometer dash on ebay with a few K miles higher than what my truck has on it now, I'm waiting for the mileages to match before I switch them out. I probably won't keep the S-10 forever and I don't want the new owner "asking questions." My uncle actually won a lawsuit against an owner who rolled back an odometer. I think he ended up winning 3 or 4K.

Re: 99 silverado question
I don't think there's a way. It's illegal to change the odometer in Idaho if the vehicle in 10 years or newer, your state may have a similar law.

Re: 99 silverado question
In Texas it is not illegal to change the mileage, it is illegal to misrepresent the mileage. We will assume that you would never sell your truck and misrepresent the mileage. You should check your area for laws pertaining to this before you proceed.
Beyond that, check eBay for vendors that sell rebuilt clusters. They can probably do what you want.

Re: 99 silverado question
You can change the cluster with one with that many miles. The computor does NOT track the miles. It does however track the hours run. In NY the mileage is recorded at each annual inspection and many insurance companies reqest mileage figures periodocally from owners. So there is a mileage trail on your truck. I run a diesel cluster when I tow my trailer so that I can monitor tranny temps. The mileage accrued while towing isn't showing up on my truck. This is a realatively small amount of my driving so its no big deal for me. I also bought an enhanced ECM for it years ago so even the hours don't match with the truck. IMHO as long as you don't missrepresent it when you sell it, do what you want.
BTW, it takes under 5 minutes to change a cluster. (4) 7mm head screws and 1 plug in connector. The bezel just pops off and on.. Bob |
