POR15 life after can is open

After I open a can of POR 15, use some, and close it back, approximately how long will it stay good? I've heard that it goes bad and hardens pretty quickly once opened. How long is "pretty quickly"? Hours, weeks, months?

Only pour what you need into a separate container for the job. If you reuse the original can to store in, make sure you put a piece of Saran wrap between the lid and the top of the can to prevent it from bonding together (you will never be able to pry it apart) Make sure there is NONE on the lip of the can when you put the lid back on. A better way to store it is to pour it into a jar to seal it up real well, keeping care not to get any on the rim of the jar or the lid seal. Once exposed to the air, it starts to cure relatively quickly. Pour some in a conatainer, and recover/reseal the rest immediately. I have heard varying results as far as shelf life goes....it all depends on how well you seal it up. I have had a can last for months, and others just for weeks.

Re: POR15 life after can is open

I've had a can that I reopened multiple times and it lasted for months. I did, however, store it in the refrigerator.

I was told years ago to put a sheetmetal screw in top and one on side of can so it will vent. Put it at the top of can. I have had a can for about 8-10 years. Have used it several times. Use a hex head, so you can get them out. Never take the top off. Hope this helps.

They also tell you after you put the plastic wrap between the lid and the can, you should store it upside down. This allows the material to skin over on the bottom of the can instead of the top. It works.

Dude!! Now that is an awesome idea!
What do you do, just shake it up before you unscrew and poor? I read on here somewhere that you should stir and not shake it. Does that matter?... or does it need to be stirred or shaken at all?

Re: POR15 life after can is open

i open it stir it real good(never shake the can!!!) i then drill 2holes in the lid 180apart and use sheetmetal screws to sealealup the can and i tahe the screws out and pour the por15 into my paint container// never work directly out of the por15container//after a few uses the sheetmetal screws get bonded to the can and i need to drill a new set of holes///done like that i've had a can last me 6-8months

SHAKING THE CAN gets all sorts of micro air bubbles and a very poor por finish

My boss sells POR15 on the side, and he told me the same thing. Seems to be working so far
