the picture u posted earlier of the gmc, the 67-68 gmc grills were a 1 piece unit, 69-72s have a thick molding on the top attached on the grill itself, in order to make your existing 72 grill fit with the 67-68 hood, u will need to remove this molding, after u remove it, the 67-68 hood will shut correctly but, there will be a small gap betwen the actual grill and hood, now, this is where that filling piece comes along. Like I said before, this pieces came available only with the 67-68 original gmc's, I will try to take a picture of mine to show u, just be patient brotha.

I'm not familiar with the 69-72 GMC front grills but here's a pic of the front of my 68 GMC. I think it shows the part that paisaloco67 is referring to.
