gauge cluster question
I am thinking about buying a gauge cluster and maybe installing a camaro tach in it. Does anyone know what years of camaro tachs will work. I found a 1980 that looks like it will.
Also do tach dashes have extra light sockets for the tach? Has anyone put in a camaro tach and had good results? thanks. |

70-74 look the best IMHO because of the needle design. The camaro tachs from 70-81 will work fine though. As for as the lighting, there are 2 bulbs on either side of the tach after you install it and they seem to light up the speed/tach/fuel just fine.
I noticed my oil pressure guage was a bit dimmer but I think its because of where I glued the tach electronics (you'll see what I mean) All in all, its a VERY easy addition and looks great. Here's mine I did a few weeks ago.... ![]() |

Didi you repaint the original needles? If so, what kind of paint did you use? ![]()

I need to repaint them all. They dont match lol. The Tach is original red. The other needles I used a Flouresant Orange from Krylon. Seems to show up very well in all light.
There is one thing I forgot to mention. You do have to trim some of the face of the tach and cut the backing to fit the cluster. I chose to just lay it into place, trim what I had to then use a hot glue gun to hold it in place. It's not going anywhere! BUT, here's what I wanted to warn you about, When you add the tach it will raise the printed circuit board aprox 3/8" and really strains it. It is possible to re-use a standard gauge type PCB but I strongly recommend buying a Gauge w/tach PCB. I just picked one up today at Chevy Duty and will be putting it on very soon. The only difference on the PCB's is there is a releaf cut out and extra material to compensate for the depth of the tach. |
