1986 Chevy truck...
Well I've been looking for a '67-'72 Chevy/GMC but they are not in my price range right now.... Anyway I also really like the '73-'87 Models, Well I have a chance to get a 1986 Chevy 305V8 with A/C<-- hooked up but don't know if it works) its an auto longbed, All of which I like, The guy says it runs and drives great but has vaccum leaks and you have to manually downshift, But then you can put it into drive and it shifts fine. He says you always have to manually downshift because of vaccum leaks. Would a vaccum leak cause that? I'm interested in this truck but I wanted to check with you guys first. I don't want to buy one that needs a transmission.

It would be useful to know that model transmission was in the truck to help answer your question better.

Just wanted to be sure about something. Saying this truck does need a transmission.. Is a TH400 hard to come by?

Not hard to come by any tranny shop could rebuild it they are not near as $$ as a 700R4 or p/u the phone and call someone like Jegs or Summit they have them they run between $890-1200 bucks.

Not sure on the trans. I got my 85 and now my 84 the same way. Was looking for a 70-72 and found them instead. Now I would even dare to say I like these more although a nice older 70-72 c10 might be in my future some day. IF you have a good trans shop locally sometimes they will check them out for free or give you an idea of possible problems. Or heck a couple bucks to prevent a bad purchase is woth it. It does sound fishy to me tho. The good news is the th400 is a heck of a transmission. You will see a lot in drag cars. they are strong but weigh a good bit. They are plentiful and normally go for more then a th350 but less then a 700r4. Also one thing about old trucks is that normally you WILL have a lot more money into them then what you bought it for. Still beats payments tho!
IF the trans worries you and you can't get a good answer there are plenty of these old boxy trucks out there.

I understand I'll end up having more in the truck then what I bought it for. lol I was hoping to find one in fair shape that was all ready on the road. That way I can still drive it as I work on it. Maybe I'll bring up that issue about the transmission and tell the guy I'm kinda worried about the trans and who knows maybe I'll get it for a better price.

yup that is a good strategy. You might also try asking in the engine and drive train section of the main board those guys Know alot. Give it a good clear title and you should get the answers right away.

YES A VACUUM LEAK COULD CAUSE THAT if the leak is going to the modulator valve also the modulator valve could be bad and you can get them at any parts store for $10

also i forgot to say that the torque converter lockup is vacuum controlled so that could also be part of the problem

you can do a lot more to a 73-87 for approx. 1/3 the cost & they come out looking pretty damn good in my book. I inherited a 84 from my dad who mpassed away. Was like you > really would like to have a 67-72, biut for the cost difference , it aint woth it ( in my opinion). Good luck on your project.
