vin tag info?
my vin tag says the vehicle has a gross weight of 4700lbs as manufactured. above it says this includes driver and passengers etc. any idea how much theyre factoring is for everything extra? my truck is a 72 shortbed fleetside. was a 6cyl/3spd/ non a/c now a 350/350
i highly doubt my shortbed can be that much over 4,000 lbs im just wondering how they got this 4700lb figure. also where is the vin stamped on the frame? i want to check to see if it matches my cab. |

The gross weight is with payload. My Longhorn states GVW 7500 lbs........but curb weight was around 4800. My guess (and thats what it is a guess!) your short bed probably weighed around 3500 curb weight(empty)... You should find a partial vin on top of the frame rail , in the steering box area......crazyL

In the early 70's the camper craze had hit. Camper manufacturers were putting campers on their 1/2 ton pickups that were within the weight rating, but they were overloading the rear axle, making the pickups hard to control. So, the government changed the way load ratings were calculated. With this, a 1/2 ton pickup no longer was rated to carry 1,000 lbs. My 74 was rated to carry a load of around 700 lbs which included the driver.

Take it to a local scale and get it wieghed for about $8. "CAT" is a nationally recognized and certified scale operator. Should be one near you somewhere...
My '72 weighs in at 4800lb, no payload, full tank of gas. The 3/4 ton chassis adds alot as does the BB that has my front end almost dragging...  Truck originally had a 350 and the published weight according to WA DMV was 4238.
