LWB on SWB Stepside Frame?

I have the opportunity to pickup a 68' SWB stepper cheap and was thinking of using it to converty my 68' LWB to a SWB. Not sure if I'll keep the bed, shorten mine or find a short box. I like the look of the short fleet over a stepper. The SWB has a 6 banger and mine a 396. Will the 68' body transfer over without major issues? I know I will have to shorten the drive shaft and change the motor mounts. Anything I should consider? My guess is it shouldn't be a problem but this is my first real project and want to make sure I get it right.

Re: LWB on SWB Stepside Frame?

to a fellow texan

there isn't much to worry about when going from a LWB to a SWB. since you are staying with a '68, there shouldn't be a problem there. do either of them have power steering?

you can keep your bed, but you will have to cut it down. i think its like 12 inches in front of the tire, and 8 inches after the tire. (someone will be able to clarify that for me though).

since you are doing the body swap, you might want to go with a 1piece drive shaft. will make things a lot easier in the long run.

the engines should swap very easily too. nothing too major there. you may want to upgrade to a 700r4 tranny for the overdrive, since you'd have the cabs off already.

do you have any specific questions?

again, welcome. and if you haven't noticed, we like pics. post some when you can.

Re: LWB on SWB Stepside Frame?

Thanks nightmare, you answered my main question. I totally forgot about the tranny upgrade. I friend of mine gave me a 700r4. It's at his home in Dallas and it needs a rebuild. Can you recommend a shop in the dfw area for the tranny rebuild?

Re: LWB on SWB Stepside Frame?

There is a real good thread in the projects and builds forum by Kevin Lewis of LFD. This cat is an awesome fabricator. In it he cuts down a long fleet to a short, step by step. You need to read this one if you are thinking about doing it yourself.

Of course there are others who have done the same thing too. His is the first one that comes to mind.
