A little clarification on rocker panel parts please.
I'm about to place my order for the last pieces of my rocker panel area. All my cab supports are good. Just the rockers, kick panels, and pillars need to be replaced. I've already ordered the outer rockers. My question concerns the inner rockers. Here is the rust hole I'm trying to fix in my 1972 project:
Is that hole part of the floor or inner rocker? Looking at my LMC truck catalog, the inner rocker piece just loooks like a flat piece of metal. It doesn't look like it has the bends at the top to 90 over and up to meet up with the floor. By the LMC catalog, it seems I would need the inner rocker and the cab outrigger piece (pieces 9 and 12). But, after looking at this post: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=219668 If you look down through some of the pictures, his inner rocker piece is exactly what I need. Are these the same pieces? Do different companies design different shaped inner rockers? What exactly do I need for my rust spot? Update: After looking at Summitracing, their goodmark inner rocker piece looks like the piece I need. So I guess my only question now is, is the piece from LMC look like the Goodmark piece? Are they the same? Thank you all very much for the help already received Kevin Last edited by KrazyKevin; 11-28-2008 at 07:21 AM. |

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
That section comes in a few different forms, one is just a rocker backing plate that has the bends like the picture from the other thread,, the other is an outer cab floor extension that includes the backer and about 4" of floor. If the floor to the edge of the backer is good then just get the backer. I don't know LMC part numbers but the Key Parts number is 0849-301 for the backer plate,, It fits both sides. If you need part of the floor then #0849-227L or 228R.

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
Judging from your first picture, I would be tempted to make a "Z" shaped piece of metal that would go under the floor and inside the inner rocker. The area would have to be sandblasted first to judge whether there is enough metal left or not.

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
Forgive me for being a noob, but out of the suggestions, one was for just the inner rocker piece which runs about $10 to $15, the other was a floor piece that runs $100. The cab floor is ok, its just where the hole is that the rust is bad. the top of the floor is fine. Again, I'm not disagreeing with any suggestions, I just don't understand where the second one is coming from.
Jim, mind elaborating on exactly what your talking about? Kinda just like adding a support backer type piece under the truck? |

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
The one Tri-pro is recommending would fix the area up into the floorboard where heavy pitting is occurring. That lip is about an 1 1/2" into the floorboard, so it should fix the pitted floorboard...your call on how far back to cut it
That tub looks to be in great shape

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
In the LMC catalog:
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/CB/full.aspx?Page=22 See item 9, it doesn't look like it has the two 90 degree bends in it. I've looked up the part numbers listed above and they show the bend I'm looking for. I'd like order everything from the same place to save on shipping but this one piece is killing me. |

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
Tri-pro would know best since he handles all of these parts in his shop.
If that's the only spot then you might get away with the inner rocker. I bet that you will have to patch some of that with your own metal though... It's gonna be thin from the rot so plan on beding your own piece of metal as well. You can get some 16ga from tractor supply or Lowes pretty cheap... check out the piece on his website, It has the horizontal part but no vertical part... $10 http://www.tri-proautomotive.com/ser...r-panel/Detail

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
I made my repair piece by hand beating it out on a steel table edge. It is full length of the inner rocker up past the curves on both ends. The first width at the floor is approximately 3" and is cut out to match the large hump in the middle. The next width which goes down is 1" approximately. The horozontal width is 1" approximately and the last down width which attaces to the inner rocker is approximately 1 1/2".
I installed the repair piece underneath so that I could fiber glass the top, (my cab had been blasted all over so welding underneath was possible). I used self tapping screws and clamps to hold the part in place and welded the bottom and top including the screw holes after removing the screws. Here is a picture of the bottom of the cab after priming, before sealing the seams and painting. Jim

Re: A little clarification on rocker parts please.
Kevin, the pc your asking about at LMC is an inner rocker. These come in dif. sizes depending on how much rot you have, that perticular peice ends right at the first 90 bend and is only long enough to reach the closest cab support bolts. Wheras the peice Tri-Pro posted, is actually the full lenght replacement. But it also replaces the metal past the two 90 degree bends all the way up onto the floor. If you look around you will see that there are different products and techniques to repair this,
Hope this makes sense to you. study your cab and go here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=271066 and here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=201540 chas
