What seems to be the best method to remove weld after replacements panels have been welding in.
Please be specific if you can on what tools and grinding methods that seems to be the best. Thanks for any information.

4" or 4 1/2" angle grinder. The better your welds, the less grinding you'll have to do. Butt welds are the hardest to do, but are best if you're looking for a professional repair.

When welding the panels in, don't butt the two pieces of metal right up against each other, leave a gap of about 1/16"
Eastwood sells little clamps that hold the metal in this position or you can clamp it another way. You won't have much to grind down and the joint will be stronger since you arent grinding away all the welding. |

You can get those butt weld clamps MUCH cheaper from Harbor freight. I like flap discs for grinding down welds much better than griding discs, or even sanding discs.

Mike C, Are you talking about the new discs that have the multiple pieces of paper overlapped onto one another? Those are very intertesting and I was wondering how they work. The guys selling them rave about them...but that is what they are supposed to do. I have never seen one of those guys with either a welder or ginder in their hands so it is hard to judge their expertise...LOL!

The flapper wheels are great but they dont last very damn long though. I seem to go through them real quick.

Yes. The more money you spend on them, usually the longer they last. They are the best thing for doing sheet metal IMO. If you are building a BBQ, go with the grinder wheel, but for sheet metal, use the flap discs.

I have to second the flap discs...yes, they are the overlapped ones that are bonded to a grinding wheel. I usually grind with a normal grinding wheel, then dress it up with the disc.

What ever methed you use be careful about the heat, I've warped as much sheet metal grinding as welding.

Flapper wheel
works great. A friend at work told me to take one home to try out. It seems to work a lot better than a standard wheel. Takes off a smaller amount and no gouges.
