Doh!! and the Homer Simpson award goes to me....

Well I learned a couple of things today....1. Installing a radio doesn't solve mysterious noises from outside the cab...2. That mysterious clunking sound I heard occasionally was my rear end and not my tranny... I heard the clunk OVER my radio today and thought to myself "That can't be good" and what do you know 2 seconds later I'm pushing the gas and was going nowhere... I pulled over and thought to myself... D@mn, I dropped a U-joint... a quick look under the truck and ..hmmm... no, not a u-joint... must be tranny...so I get back in and put it gear... and heard something spinning...being the curious person that I am... I get out with it in gear and look under the truck.. and Lo and Behold my driveshaft was that spinning sound I heard...Looks like I need to pop that cover and survey the damage... after I get back from Vacation this weekend... Go Stars...

ouch, that sucks, at least a rear end is cheaper to fix then a tranny, and easier to do in my opnion. How did you get it home?

I had the exact same tning happen to me, it sheared the bolt that holds the cross pin(thing that the spiders ride on) in the carrier. The clunk was the pin hitting the end of the pinion, and eventually it shaved enough off the pin to let a spider go free. The other spider desintegrated from the impact.

Hope you got another rear end.

And you really should be ashamed, at least I found another Chev to tow mine with.

Sorry about the luck though, I really hope it isn't your driver like mine was/is.

My junk 87 did that to me too.......the pinion shaft snapped off at 75 MPH on interstate......clunk and the rear locked up and we hopped to a stop. I just gutted the rear along the shoulder of the road and plugged output housing on the transfer case, threw the driveshaft in the back of the truck and drove home on the front axle........4x4 is really nice to have sometimes.

she was my driver....

I'm glad I haven't pulled the motor out of the 71 like I was going to do last weekend... I'll have to drive it until I can fix the 68... I have a 5 lug rear-end with a 2.73 posi in my 72 parts truck. They are both leaf spring trucks. Do you think I can put that small of a gear behind a 305v6 and th400 with 31" inch tires? I can put smaller tires on it... or should I just get the stuff to fix the Dana 44

Thanks,

behind door number one......

Well I popped the cover just now... and I don't think it is suppose to look like this... I have never done anything with rear ends... is this salvagable? or should I put the other rear end under it?

You are very courageous getting out of your truck with it in gear and running...then looking under it!!!! WOW! I found myself on four differnet occasions chasing my truck or vehicle down the road under similar circumstances...those were real Homer moments....LOL!!!

Heres some damge pics for you too look at.
I drove around for the longest time hearing a clinking noise from the back of my car. Then one day it sounded like I dropped a driveshaft.

In this one look to the lower left of the pinion gear. Thats a hole. There was also one starting in the upper right.

I also deserve a Simpson award...i recentely went to put a new driveshaft yolk on my truck (the old one was cracked), and i wasn't aware of the close tolerances that are involved in the rearend. So, after putting in the new yolk, and bolting up the driveshaft, i went to drive down the road and i hear a very awful monaning/grinding noise from the rear axle. I took the truck home, and popped off the cover. Turns out that i didn't tighten the pinion nut down enough, and the pinion gear came forward and hit the carrier. I talked to several people. Some said the rear axle was now junk, some said i needed a new crush sleeve, and some said it was fine. So, i got out the 3/4" drive ratchet, and torqued the pinon nut down as far as i could get it, where the sleeve was just starting to crush. I put the cover on, filled it up with fluid, and the rearend still works great several thousand miles later, with no weird noises. The pinion seal does leak a bit now, but thats it. I don't know how much longer it will last, but if she goes i will just swap in a junkyard unit .

12 bolt.

I would say it should be salvageable, as long as it didn't punch through the housing or anything. Of course, you will need new gears, bearings, seals... it might be less expensive to find another one to put in.

I have decided to go with the one in my parts truck...135 bucks just for the gears plus all the other bs to go with it... then I'd have to pay to have it put in...I wanted a 5 lug anyway...this way is the lowest possible cost to me... I would rather spend the money on my 71

What you are describing before the rear end in your truck grenaded sounds hauntingly familiar... oh well, nothing last's forever, you were probably thinking about changing gears anyway , right?

Well you guys? I feel bad for you, having a rearend go out on you has to s*^k. When I bought Jenna's 71, we repaced the Engine, and changed the tranny oil, and checked the rearend oil. The truck has ran great for us. Being that the truck has like 2 million miles on it. OK mabe not 2 Million, but the original owner fliped the milage gauge 3 times before I bought it. And I got to flip it the 4th time right after I bought it. Now it has 16000 miles on it. I guess that means I'm next on the list for a major brake down. I hope not.
