283 swap to 396

I have a buddy who wants to trade me a 396 with a 4 speed muncie for my 283 with a th350. Truck would for sure not be a daily driver after that but it sure would be fun to drive when i did. Any opinions on the 396 and would my 10 bolt be able to handle it?

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=259536 This is what I did when I put my BB in. You don't have to go to this extreme but you might have to change out the perches to get some headers or even the stock headers to clear the engine perches. Some just use later model mounts and cut the frame back a bit.

That is great man thanks. How did you work your motor mounts? Did you use mounts and brackets from the bb or would you be able to sb mounts?

Re: 283 swap to 396

The mounts are the same it is the perches that are the problem most of the time. You can't get a header on the left side without butchering the perch. I don't even think stock manifolds will work unless you cut the frame rail. The perches I have are aftermarket and cost about $140. They come with a car style motor mount.

Re: 283 swap to 396

It is much easier to use the 73-87 perches and mounts. Then buy headers for the same year.

what 502 said-
I went at it bassackwards getting 70-model big block headers, then had to find the right perches to get clearance on the driver's side; they're available aftermarket but pricey, if you're not in a hurry, watch the parts side of the site or craigslist for a deal. Good luck!

Re: 283 swap to 396

I got everything together to do this swap and didnt do it. Anyway, I found the perches 502 has for 20 bucks out of a 88 suburban. They were held on w/ jamb nuts, so warm up your wrists before removing!
