Painting the dash pad! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Has anyone done this and what are the things I need to know to get it don. It seems that I cannot find the correct color stuff so got some paint mixed at NAPA and thought why not! It it called Dupont Vinyl and guy says I can paint the dash pad with it. Any experience out there?

I haven't done it but would recommend using some "prep-sol" to remove the years of Armor All.
I think it's a good way to freshen up a pad! good luck and show us the pictures.

i've used the dupli-color (and some other brand) in the past that is specificly made for this, and I have had great results. Door panels don't hold up very well, after 5 years or so you can start to see it wear off around the arm rest, but dash pads and headliners... holds up almost perfect.
I did the dash pad in the longhorn back in 01 (it was in the old GMC at that time) and it had a couple scratches when I pulled it out in 04, shot it again as it went into the longhorn... and it has like 1 or 2 scratches in it now. (both of these trucks were daily drivers)
I DON'T recomend doing the armrests, it flakes off after a year or so due to the arm rest being soft.

And I agree with the above..... clean it like 5 or 6 times with a scrub brush and some degreaser, then some prep solv.

The dash pad in this photo used to be blue, the visors were whiteish, console was red (regular paint on that) one door panel was red, the other was black I think... Armrests were black (never painted them)... headliner (not that you can see it) was blue... and I can't even remember what color the rubber mirror base cover was... but it's black now too.

There`s this product called Bullydog that`s a prep for coating vinyl and plastics that enhances bonding.I go to an automotive paint supplier (PPG) and get spray cans made in a die for interior pieces.I think it`s about $13.That`s where I get the Bullydog.

Yup the Prep work is key to the dash pad and door panels.
Done it on many trucks and turns out nice with the right preperation.
Also Andy was spot on about the arm rest.
