removing axle perches ?

What would be the best way to remove the axle perches on my "new" rear end? I have to weld some new ones on,but I dont have a plasma cutter or a torch. So pleaese excuse the rookie question. Any tips?

Re: removing axle perches ?

Well the best way is a plasma or a torch, or borrowing one from a friend or maybe even Home Depot (torches). It doesn't get any easier. Otherwise, cut them off carefully with a parting wheel on an angle grinder, and grind the rest down.

Re: removing axle perches ?

I used a 4" angle grinder with a cutoff wheel (used 2 or 3 total iirc) when I did mine. Ground off the excess with a grinder disc or you could use a flapper disc to clean it up. Just be careful because it's easy to pinch and shatter one of the cutting blades.

Re: removing axle perches ?

I use a cutoff wheel too. It's better than a torch or plasma if you are wanting to save them for re- use. Usually, you don't have to cut very deep... just thru the weld far enough to break them loose with a hammer & chisel.

Re: removing axle perches ?

I typically will use a torch to cut off axle pads and then grind the little bit left on the axle off with a hard disc. If your good with the torch you can reuse the pads if need be.

accidents do happen, I won't hang up my grinder because someone got hurt though. how would life be if you lived by that belief? if anything, it should be an eye opener to think things through and use the proper protective equipment........

Re: removing axle perches ?

i would guess it got pinched and broke some pieces off. there are warnings about not using chipped discs, but many, including me, are guilty of still using them.
it hurts the structural integrity and they are capable of exploding with the high rpms of the grinder

i still use them myself, im only more causious now. and wear the PROPER equipment. the break was due to the wheel getting wedged/cocked, then it came apart. it hasent stoped me, i just pay more attention.

Agreed!! Use someone else's mistake to learn from and not follow suit. Proper PPE is always a good idea, no matter what.

Hey...wait a minute, Joe... didn't you have the entire head of your grinder break off?? (So that's why you can't hang it up. )

yeah I was cutting the solid steering shaft on '66, the cut-off wheel got pinched and the head of my grinder blew off...no damage to vehicle or any persons though

Re: removing axle perches ?

WOW. I always wear safety glasses ear plugs etc. Going today to get a full shield. I use tons of cutting discs and grinding discs every year. I actualkly wear out about two 4.5:" grinders each year. I did have a 1/4" thick grinding rock get into my hand once, that was bad enough. Never thought about one attaking me like that though. Hope your doing better.
