Cutting Coils???
How much can I get away with cutting my coils to lower my truck? I want a 2-3" drop in the front where my coils are so how much should I cut off to acheve this? Also anyone know of a place in MA where I can get my rear leaf springs de-arched? Thanks

Hotrod, I have done it, but will say its not the best way. If you are going to cut the coils, take 1 full ring(they will seat properly top & bottom), & you will see a 2 1/2-3" drop. Good luck, crazyL

Bad decision? I disagree. I cut mine, took a full coil off and lowered it 2 1/2 inches up front. I have lowered all years of Chevy trucks, from an 83 with drop spindles to a 90 with 3 inch drop tubular A-arms to many 67-72 chevy trucks. Yes cutting a coil affects the front end geometry but not enough to cause problems IMO. Mine rides great, was aligned by a professional and the tires wear evenly.
I say yes there are better ways to achieve a front drop than cutting a coil, but if your funds are limited I say go for the cut. I would go 1/2 a coil at a time in case your drop is too extreme for you. |

My buddy cut his neighbors 71' one full coil with no probs over 2 years ago. I'll still go with drop coils though.

Yeah, drop spindles would be the best route, but sometimes you do what you have to do. I wouldn't cut more than 1 coil though !

Yea, I cut mine about 12 yrs ago.......back then nobody offered a drop spring for the 67-72. It was a temporary deal(posta been anyway), but I have logged about 12,000 miles on the cut coils & no problems with ride or handling..........crazyL
