400 sb

Just stumbled across a 400 small block 4 bolt main. Just a block. Guy wants $100 for it. Is it worth getting? I prefer the big blocks myself, but i know these aren't very common either. Any advice or opinions? Thanks, Eric

Re: 400 sb

Check it out VERY carefully....lots of cracked block 400's out there. I had a buddy who bought one once....not good.

If the block is good it's a bloody steal! 400's are excellent small blocks!

Re: 400 sb

You need to have it checked for cracks around the mains because the 4 bolt cap bolts are in a very thin area of the block and are known to crack but if not the price is great.

Re: 400 sb

Two bolt blocks are stronger than the 4 bolt blocks when it comes to a small block 400. Have it checked for cracks very carefully before dumping any money into it.

Re: 400 sb

Also check the bore, you don't want it if it's already .030 and needs to bore again.

Re: 400 sb

I would look it over really close also. The lifter valley cracks on them as well. Otherwise you have a $100 boat anchor. The "4 Bolt" term is highly over rated IMO.
