right... well... I got my headers on my 79, no problem at all, nothing to it, aside from needing a small dimple on the #3 plug so my wire boot will clear and not go melting off on me...

However... I had intended on running a pair of purple hornies, right off the headers... and wouldn't ya know it? the headers drop about an inch too low for me to be able to run the drivers side glasspack over the damned crossmember... and they don't drop low enough for me to be able to run it under it....

how do I get around this?
Right now my only option is to have an exhaust shop make me a modified header collector extension so it bumps up and goes over the crossmember, and will have to get one for the other side to get the exhaust so they're even in placement...

i assume theres no way around it...
exhaust shops won't touch my truck so I kind of have to play it by measurements, because I won't be putting cats back on it until I run a true dual with a bigblock ... and I can't afford to get a pair of cats for another few months, and the way the headers are, it'd be damn near impossible to mount them anyway...

any suggestions? I assume all other crossmembers that fit the trucks are the same way? I don't think it'd be possible to pirate a crossmember from a 454 3500 2wd 76 or 78 Suburban and use that... would it?

exaust shops may not touch your truck, but if you ask them to bend a piece a pipe a certain way and add a collector flange they'll do it. Just dont tell em its going on a cat vehicle. Its for your engine on a test stand at home. Yeah thats the ticket

Tom... the shop said they'd be able to bend something for me... but I'd want to put a header flange on each end, that way I can just bolt my stupid exhaust up ... I've got aluminum gaskets for it, so leaks wouldn't be much of a problem I would hope...

but if I can get around it with a different crossmember if possible i'd be more willing to do that, because I'd be using the crossmember anyway when I go to a TH400/496 instead of the TH350/350 I have now... assuming I get the damn engine pulled anyway, lol...

was wondering if anyone had run into the same problem though and what they did...

by the way... I'd like to have the truck there for them to just measure **** for me but they won't do it... I'm half tempted to tell them "If you can bend the pipes and make me an equalizer tube and header flanges right after the equalizer tube, its going to have cats on it, however, if I can't, I just have to do it my own way..."

wonder if exhaust shops will do work on cars that people say "will have cats"

If your still using the L style crossmember, go get a double hump one out of a U-Pull yard. Makes all those exhaust problems dissapear. Check threads on "double hump crossmember"

how much different is the double hump? my main problem is on the drivers side where the cat used to be ... is the double hump lower or higher ?

The double hump crossmember is the same on both sides. It has the same look as the passenger side of your crossmember but on both ends. You will have to drill a couple of holes but everyone agrees it not only helps with exhaust fitments but now ground clearance improves too!

i ran into the same problem. i went to a yard and i got another crossmember... i cut both of them in half and i stuck them together! it worked out great!

now thats a rather interesting idea

I'll have to see how long it'll be till I pull the engine/transmission from the suburban or if i'll have to just go get another one from a yard next week...

exhaust setup looks pretty much like what I'm doing, aside from the fact that my mufflers are purple and have turndowns there

hmm.... i'm thinking i may want to get a new crossmember when i have my exhuast redone.

i guess i wouldnt have to since i'm gonna have shortie headers though.

probably not... you could get stuff easilly made... I went long tube cause i was hoping they'd clear, didn't find out till later that the headers clear fine, its just the stuff after the headers I'll have a problem with, lol

haha... well... clearing the ground i have no problem with yet... course if I don't get new shocks up front that may change as I've yet to drive it

could've saved yourself a lot of work by just finding the double hump crossmember, as that is exactly what it looks like.
