Must you remove manual crossmember when going to auto???
I know I know......I searched...the search function on here is dsyfunctional at best....
Anyhow, when going to auto.....in this case from a 350/ 4 speed to a 5.3/ TH400, MUST you take out that pain in the ass looking bellhousing holding crossmember because it sure doesn't look very fun or easy. Will the auto fit around it or no??? Anyone ever leave theirs in? |

You'll need an auto crossmember instead of that one. Never heard of anyone retaining it but I don't know it all. I got mine for $50...they're cheap!

You will have to remove the manual tranny crossmember. You won't be able to clear it with the bell housing to install or remove the auto trans. WES

Sorry there's no short cut...I hate cutting those out too...last time I did it I used up three sawzall blades [no air tool I had would budge the rivets].

Im super impressed....borrowed a buddy's mac air hammer....knocked each rivet out in less than 10 second......cut the member in half right in the middle real quick and tapped it with a hammer.....out in about 10 minutes.....wooohooooooo

Mines still in place in the '70 Chevy. I have an '86 Camaro TPI/700r4 in the truck... I also have new motor mounts all the way around. LockDoc

I just cut a section out of the middle and left the sides with a 700-R4 in it now.

Re: Must you remove manual crossmember when going to auto???
I removed my Manual x member in one piece, unlike mellow yellow, Cut the rivets out, and have a GOOD manual crossmember, linkage, trans, shift coulmn for sale. When you change from manual to auto the manual x member has to go

I used a 4" angle grinder to get the two I had out. I took longer...but I got it out in one piece.

it looks like if your truck is a 3 or 4 speed truck and making it auto cost more money
