Thinking of changing from a 4 speed to an automatic...

But something tells me it's not as straight forward as I may think. Of course I need a tranny and torque converter, but I think I may also need a drive shaft. I have a regular everyday all american SB 350. I currently have a 4 speed saginaw tranny. I will also have a little issue with my interior since it's built all around my shifter:

Has anyone done this change? I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Thanks!

Re: Thinking of changing from a 4 speed to an automatic...

blew clutch in my 65 c10 3sp moved to floor. rebuilt my first auto a th400 for it. 1200 mile break deer hunting trip worked great. You'll need trans, flex plate, dip stick, shifter (I traded used B/M ) probably need to rework /shorten or new drive shaft, new ujoints, oil cooler, lines, & crossmember. My shifter is cable controlled & looks like it could fit into or real close to console you have. Normally I'm a floor shifter guy but old lady's going to be driving this alot as I'm building a 54 chev truk right now. Got munchie m21 ripped off, so I'm going with 350 deal on that one for now. Local shops around here will build strong 350 or 400 for 5-$600 with shift kit. I was able to work off/trade labor for all parts & use of someone's tools so I was in mine for less then $100, but I had rebuildable 400 here. It is comfortable be lazy without shifting especially in traffic tho. Getting old i hate to admit. UR truck looks tits tho.
good luk JW
