Re: looking for corner carving suspension
you could go with bags from air ride

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
Can't think of anything better than Porterbuilt's c4 dropmember. It's made for a shockwave bag but I'm sure you could run a coilover instead no problem.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
Just a reminder, its a truck. It weighs well in excess of 2 tons. It's not going to handle the road or carve a canyon with grace and stability...
The C4 drop member is for the 67-72's last time I checked. I may be wrong though. If you can get C4 suspension under there, you should be able to get some QA1 adjustable coil-overs for it. Utilizing the stock suspension, you can lower it, add larger swaybars, increase the spring rate, wider tires, bigger brakes, traction bars, fuel injection, and fuel tank baffles, new bushings, lightweight rims, and most importantly, sticky tires...

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
Porterbuilt has C4 setups for the 73-87's AFAIK.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
My stepside is belltech 3" drop spindles, and 1" dropped coils in the front and a 4" shackle/hanger drop in the rear. I also have their 1 3/8" front sway bar and 1 1/8" rear sway bar. It handles very well considering its a fullsize with a static drop on 17's... Its not the lowest truck but the biggest part of that is lowering the center of gravity on it, and keeping it there as it goes through corners.
Its just like anything else, It depends on your budget, willingness or ability to do creative fab work ect... For a coilover rear set up you could take cues from the bagged crew and use either a truck arm kit, which essentially turns the rear suspension into that of a 67-72 truck. Its the same basic setup as used in nascars. Im not sure anyone makes a mid-crossmember for that in 73-87 style but check out http://www.hotrodstohell.net/ for what thats all about... OR You could get a bolt/weld on 4 link kit from somewhere and just throw coilovers at it rather than bags... but make sure you use a panhard bar or something to keep the rear centered! Just my $0.02 |

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
I don't think I've ever seen a 73-87 on here set up strictly for handling. I have always wanted to know how those trucks in bigblock73's avatar are set up.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
Wide wheels/tires, stiff springs, thick sway bars are all your best bets to improve handling. Go a step further and dial in some neg camber and positive caster for even better results.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
I lowered my 84 and then added the sway bars from Hellwig. I can now put this thing into some pretty nice corners and hold it. It may not do the Gs of a vette, but then again it is a 4000 # SWB truck.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
I have a polygraphite kit installed. It holds the road nicely. The truck corner pushes back before the truck tilts over. I can go around underpasses (u turns) at a good rate of speed, but the tires begin to break loose. I would like to tests some better performance tires. Or better yet, find a road course to punish the tranny.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
I think if I were looking to go for a performance suspension without bags, I'd probably look at the truck arm rear kit from CPP. I thought there was a Fatman Mustang II type front end kit with options for coilovers or bags, but I can't find it on their site.

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
If money is no object then a Porter Built C-4 Drop Member is the way to go, he makes them for coil over & bag applications
Pretty sure he has a rear set up also But I would prolly try to swap in a 67-72 trailing arm set up in the rear if it were me, like said that is whats used on nascar & stuff, so it should be good enough if you dont wanna spend the money on IRS Also getting it stupid low is gonna help tons, plus lighter weight will help also |

Re: looking for corner carving suspension
I cant help you with the rear, but i did a coilover conversion on my 67. Havent had had drivetime(only drove around 30 miles before I took the body off), but seemed better and now I have choices for spring rate and dampening.
Ill try to post a link.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=266485 |
