Code reading and data logging with computer?

has anyone used an adaptor to read the PCM data, reset the light, and log data? My 99 has a miss under certain load conditions and a TCC that seems to be fading. Would like to look at the data stream to confirm TCC on signal(solenoid is cheap but a @#*#*@ to get at), and figure out which bank my misfiring is on. Not really sure I want to dump $150 on a scan tool that does 'generics' if I can spend $250 and get the cable and PC software for my laptop with data logging etc. parts swapping is too many $$ on this LS (8 coils not 1, 8 injectors, aluminum heads with plugs, etc.) and it's $500 to drive in the dealer's door.

Any experience?

Re: Code reading and data logging with computer?

i have used a program called PROSCAN. it was a program my buddy had bought for his pc. it would data log, screen capture, read and reset codes and all kinds of different features that i didnt need for my situation. he said he has free updates and it covers every vehicle made. only cost him 165$ i will see if i can find it on the net and give you a link.

Re: Code reading and data logging with computer?

well i just bought it. i had used my buddys in the past with good results. the price for this with all the features is the same price for a gm code reader that doesnt display any info besides the code. this covers every vehicle from 96 to now, not just gm only or.........

Re: Code reading and data logging with computer?

yes i got it, came last saturday. the product is great, but there shipping/processing department sucks. it seems like most orders are taking 3-5 weeks right now. dont know why. it took 4 weeks for mine to get here, i submitted a ticket and recieved a response promptly. my buddy told me that when he ordered his, it took 3 weeks. there whole 2 day shipping is more like 4 weeks. be patient as once you get the product, you will love all the features. the ability to scan and read sensors + all the other stuff they have for the price is unbeatable. when you get it your cd software version will be 5.0 (i think it was), i upgraded to 5.5 on there site(newest version) and it has more features than the version on the cd. if you have any issues setting it up after you get it, my email is dukemnowok@aol.com
once you figure out what com port to select, its just plug and play. i have noticed on my 99 truck i need to have 34000 baud rate selected. on my 96 it wouldnt connect unless 9600 was selected. but for me its always set on com4 no matter what baud i have to use.

Re: Code reading and data logging with computer?

1 more thing that will make some of the features most accurate, for the vehicles you will use it on, look for the drag coeficcient and actual weight. those plus tire size is info requested when making profiles. this info makes the fuel consumption analsiys spot on. on my trip with the gallons i used and miles driven figured on paper to 15.5mpg, proscan had it at 15.8. that was pretty dam close.

Re: Code reading and data logging with computer?

Well I ran it on my 98 minivan and cleared the stupid purge solenoid code.
Then I ran it on the 99 Sierra, misfire code, multiple and pending codes on Bank2 O2 sensor 2 so it looks like cat is fried or O2. Cleared them, stumble went away. Drove into work, set a SES after about 1 minute, but the TCC worked good, ran good. Will recheck codes and clear tonight.

The instructions are not particularly good. Still trying to figure out how to log data other than the freeze frame. I'll download 5.5 tonight and see if I can figure out hosw to read the TCC command. May end up with a jumper wire and a voltmeter.
