Porterbilt Dropmember?

I am buying a chassis without a front crossmember. If I get a dropmember can I so a static drop instead of bagging it? Will it make the static drop lower with the dropmember than without it?

Re: Porterbilt Dropmember?

Why static drop? If you're trying to budget the 'swap', you could go w/schrader filled bags to start & then add the air management as funds allow.

If it's not a budget thing, I know Porter looked into making a coil-spring version of The Dropmember but the complications of the build requirements deemed it one-off/spec request vs. something that the avg. Joe might want. It can prob be done, but the issue will be the placement of the coil in the lower a-arm vs where the upper mount is (remember the track width is narrowed so the spring C/L is moved farther out on the lower a-arm vs. where the OE spring C/L was).

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Re: Porterbilt Dropmember?

If your not wanting to bag it just just a stock crossmember from a 73-87 put some drop spindles on it and call it good.

Re: Porterbilt Dropmember?

Ohhh. Will a 73-87 give me a bit more drop than just spindles/springs? Btw it is a 68 LWB 1/2 ton chassis. All help appreciated.

No. You won't gain any 'drop' vs. the correct 67-72 c.member. What is your goal?

Re: Porterbilt Dropmember?

My goal is about a 4/6-5/7 drop. Somewhere in that range.

4/6 drop is easily obtained using drop spindles + shorter coils (either cut stockers of aftermarket dropped springs). 4/6 drops are also not so 'radical' that you have to constantly worry about the lower a-arms hitting the road.

The 5/7 drop is just more spring drop vs. the 4/6. The 5/7 drop does get the a-arms close enough that there's a 'pucker-factor' on some roads.

This is where the Porterbuilt Dropmember (or most aftermarket front c.members) offer increased value as they allow for drop while keeping the a-arms farther away from the roads surface (some more than others).

Coil or leaf rear suspension?

Re: Porterbilt Dropmember?

I have rear coils. I know all about drops and such. I was just wondering if I "had" to bag my truck to add the PB Dropmember. I think I will go with 4/6 and maybe some helper bags for the heavy loads. Eventually I want to do a Kelderman system.

Thanks. Can the IFS handle weight? Like if I got a yard of dirt in the back? It would only be an extra couple hundred pounds on the IFS.
