Where to get a factory radio rebuilt - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

85 GMC, factory radio needs rebuilt. Is there someone out there that rebuild these units or sells a reman unit? I don't need anything more. The radio has a short in it and will play only the right channels sometimes and the station tuning knob is stripped out.

Don't know if this will help, but sometimes dust will get inside and cause what may seem like a short. Give her a good cleanng with some type of "dry" spray, like you would use on a computer. Also, I have seen where old radios have a string that moves the indicator, it may have came off. Probably any electronics business could freshen her up. We have a place called Delta Electonics here that I believe can do it. I can call them tomorrow if you want me to.

Thanks for the offers/suggestions. I really just want the outdated radio to work properly. I don't guess there is a big enough demand for someone to refurbish the factory unit.

you can get a new old style of radio for the price it would cost to get that old one fixed I am sure. and as much as a pain in the butt it is to get it out and in. I wouldent put a old or used radio in there lol

Did you look in Hemmings magazine? If you do have one or want to buy one sometimes the Libraries have them.

Link has been fixed.

Cost was approx $400. Expensive, well depends on how you look at it. I have a factory looking radio, that sounds as good as a newer radio (45wx4 too, digital tuner, etc.). I also don't have to hack my dash, and the radio won't appeal to thieves looking for a nice head unit. I prefer this over the goofy looking newer head units any day of the week.

Input, you simply plug in your MP3 player. Once the signal is recognized, the radio switches over to your MP3 player and off you go.

Remember he didn't just get it repaired he got it rebuilt and upgraded.

Let me tell you, the radio sounds fantastic!! I can't wait to get it in the truck, get the truck running..and go for a looong drive!
