Alternator?

My uncle said it was that and he works on vehicles but he is still in the hospital and wont be out til Tuesday. he said it was the alt and volt reg. so what are the best ones for 40 to 99 bucks and a good voltage regulator. I'm sick of the external volt reg.

go to auto-advance-orillies-zone and get an alternator for an 86 model Chevrolet silverado, with a 350 engine. then search the faq for toddtheodd's write up on the conversion. It takes 10 minutes to install, and the only cost is the money for the alt (mine was $44 a couple months back)

Re: Alternator?

Your uncle said what was the alternator? Is "it" a charging problem, like a dead battery? Are you smelling sulfur, like an over charging battery?Or,did he identify a part as an alternator from a picture you showed him?
You won`t have a core if you go buy an internal regulator alt.I grabbed a used one off an`88 6.2 Suburban I had for parts.I don`t know prices at parts stores.

Re: Alternator?

Got my internal reg. alt. at advance & used my old external reg. alt as the core. All they did was take the old alt as the core & put it in the new box, gave me the new alt. They didn't look at the difference. Anyway, just act dumb and say that's what came off your (73 or newer) truck.

Re: Alternator?

She looks cute.Nice hair.

Just ask for an alternator for a 1973 GMC 1/2t 350 Automatic and any other questions they ask just say yes if it`s on your truck (like a/c & p/s).
When they give it to you ask,"This is internal regulated, right?"
And everything like that and all like this.

Re: Alternator?

There are 2 styles of internal regulator GM alternators, the 10si, and then the 12si. The 10si will put out about 63 amp and then the 12si is more modern and puts out up to 94 amps and has better cooling. These alternators were produced in different 'clock' positions for different mounting positions depending on what brackets you are using and whether you are mounting it on driver's side or passenger side, etc. You can choose the exact alternator you want and also what clock position you want. This is a very helpful link explaining all about GM Delco SI alternators and also for getting the alternator you want/need and will tell you part numbers and also examples of what car to tell the parts counter person:

http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...elcoremy.shtml

Scroll down for the 'parts list'

I just performed this upgrade on my truck. I installed this alternator:

12SI, 94 amp, at 9:00 (AC-DELCO # 321-269, Lester #7294-9)

Tell the auto parts counter person that “The alternator is for a 1985 Buick Riviera, 5.0L (307Y engine), with Heavy Duty options and Air Conditioning.”
