Tailgate question

I have a 71 cheyenne/10 and was wondering what tailgate came on the truck. I've seen the ones with the smaller chrome Chevrolet letters that are only inch and a half or so high inside the woodgrain trim on alot of these trucks. The tailgate on my truck has 5-6 inch high letters that are stamped into the gate, which has no woodgrain. Just wondering if i have the right gate or if they came with different tailgates that year? Unfortunately, the PO informed me he made a deal with the body man and traded him all of the trim for labor because he didnt want it on the truck...so there is no trim, and this tailgate...just a bit confused i guess. Thanks for the clarification.

Re: Tailgate question

The 67 tailgate was a touch different than the 68-72, but basicly all the gates are the same. the woodgrain/black tailgate trim was applied directly over the stamped chevrolet tailgate.

Re: Tailgate question

I believe all the tailgates are stamped. The woodgrain was an additional trim piece on the Super Cheyenne. (IIRC)

Re: Tailgate question

Wasn't that piece of tailgate trim a hot commodity back in the day when these trucks were "late model" trucks? I recall seeing the same piece of trim placed on a '64-66 tailgate. It would have been available at a dealers parts department so you could put it on any trim level vehicle. The CST's were the only ones that came with the woodgrain version from the factory, as part of the trim level, without having to specify it or add it to the vehicle.

I also remember seeing them with black backgrounds, too....but not lately.

If you don't want the CHEVROLET stamping on the tailgate, you can buy an aftermarket item. You will pay extra to get a replacement tailgate that has the stamping in it....copyright laws and all that.

Re: Tailgate question

thanks for the feedback guyz...so most likely mine probably had the trim on originally, but was taken off and now shows the stamped gate.

Re: Tailgate question

CST and both Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super included the trim as part of the package they were sold with, so if it is a real cheyenne Z84 (option number) or YE9 (Cheyenne Super) it would have originally had the woodgrained tailgate trim. Some trucks have had it added on either by dealers or over the counter- I parted a LWB custom deluxe that had the tailgate trim added at some point. There were at least two variations of this trim, one version that had the chrome letters and a another version that had a grey painted type of letter installed- have seen it both ways.
