started tearing the 327 down

i started tearing the 327 down and this is what i found a broken exhaust valve have no idea where the rest went( THINK IT IS WHAT IS FUSED TO THE PISTION). this was on the number 8 cylider. i've yet still to find a reason for the knocking sound mains and rod are tight no spun bearings so it was either piston slap or spun cam bearings seeing i haven;t removed the cam yet.

the motor is a 327 out of a 67 acorrding to the number on the block. plan go getting rid of the vent tube and going with a pvc system. i cleaned the piston to see if i t been bored but no numbers on top of piston. plus only pistons i can find for the 327 are flat tops no valve relieves which throws me off

Re: started tearing the 327 down

well talked to the machine shop today 50 buxs ot hot tank it to remove everything, 15 buxs a hole to bore it 25 to install cam bearings and freeze plug 230 buxs a head to do the heads so i'll probably buy a set fo gm performer heads to go back on iti measured the bore today also 4.005 inch so its still a standard block i'll probably be going 30-40 over with it

Re: started tearing the 327 down

nice bit of damage you've got there!

are the heads orig to the 327? 1967 could have been a very nicely equipped 327, depending on what it was in.

Why not trash the 327 and go with a 350? Just curious.

Dude, 327's way cooler....not for any real performance reason, it just sounds like the type of motor that your dad had in his '56 when he used to street race back in '66. You should definitely get 15" Cragar SS's, too, if you're gonna run a 327. And none of this automatic transmission stuff, either! You'll need a muncie from a 68novaSS. K, had my little nostalgia moment, carry on with the thread.

Re: started tearing the 327 down

Nothing wrong with a 327 at all. A 350 will give you a very minute increase in torque (maybe 15 ft-lbs), but you can usually wind a 327 a little further, all other parts being equal.

There are some differences between M21 and 22, I believe ratios are different but so is the overall torque capacity/strength. I just mentioned the 68 Nova cause a lotta guys used to use parts like those - just like a lotta guys are now using 5.3's, 700R4's, stuff like that. Just recalling stories I used to hear from the older hot rodders.

Re: started tearing the 327 down

only difference ina 327 and 350 is the stroke both have a 4 inch bore so techongly i could put a set of 350 rods and a 350 crank in it can call it a 350 not really this motor is the small journals

Re: started tearing the 327 down

There are about 4,000 different arguments about which motor is best....no one can ever win any of them because even 2 engines built with the same parts on the same dyno can vary a little bit. However, there is something to be said about 2 engines with the same bore and a shorter/longer stroke. That longer stroke will invariably give you more torque (all other parts being equal), but the shorter stroke will generally allow you to rev them more without spreading steel all over the highway.

Case in point is the 302 chevy - yes, the original idea was to qualify camaro's for the TRANSAM circuit (5.0 liter engine limit), but the way to get there was brilliant for this type of car - shorten the stroke for lower rotating assembly weight and potentially higher revs. This lets you tune the manifold/heads/cam to make power higher in the rpm range, therefore making the engine better for circle track type racing. Now, if you wanted to pull a boat, a 450 HP 302 is NOT going to be a good idea I(unless you put 4.56's in it and ran it 4,200 rpms down the highway!).

People also argue the 350/383/400 SBC thing, too...the long stroke of a 400 with a small bore of a 350 is great for making that low rpm torque, but wouldn't necessarily be best for your weekend dirt track racer.

Anyways, sorry for all the words - love the 327 idea! Stick with it!
