Drty... Do you have the trans yoke? If so, put it in the trans all the way, pull out 1". Measure center of ujoint cap hole to rear yoke center. Let me know that distance, I have a few shafts out in the shed. By the way, chk this out.

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

what is the length of the tail shaft if its the long tail i have a drive shaft with brand new carrier bearing that i could sell ya just pm me if you need it just measure the rear tail housing and let me know how long it is. i can then tell you if its the same as mine. but also if your wanting to go with a one piece driveshaft you can get one from a 1993 chevrolet 1500 short wheel base with a 700r4 and have the drive shaft cut three inches and it should be perfect. i just went from a th400 long tail to a 700 r4 and i measured three inch difference.

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

My truck has a 350 and a TH400. The drive train is out, and the driveshaft is still intact. I can measure it, if you like, but it is the original 2-piece shaft w/center support still attached. Oh, my truck is a SWB.....

59 1/4 inches, center of rear to center of front u-joint. The yoke is attached to the front, as you know. Again, this is a 2-piece drive shaft, and includes the center bearing, which is included in the overall length that I quoted.

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

so is that that from the back of the yoke? My trucks not here at the house so I dont have that measurement, but we measured the overall length needed.

Lucky had mentioned that a Big Block shaft worked in his....I wonder if a shaft from a Big Block in a GM wagon would be the same length???? Maybe a stupid idea but still a idea...lol

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

this is the tranny i had in my truck and you can see the front portion of the driveshaft. if you have the shorter tranny then you can get the driveshaft from a 1993 chevy 1500 with the 700r4 change the yoke and it will be a perfect fit

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

this is what i would do go and buy a 1993 chevy 1500 driveshaft be sure its swb myne cost $35 from a local junk yard see if it will fit if it doesent measure from the bolt hole on the rear end yoke to the seal on the tranny take the drive shaft and the measurements to them have them cut it i had a driveshaft cut three inches last week for i monte carlo i put a 700r4 in and it cost $65 out the door with balancing.

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

that will be the easiest way to do it in my opinion. this is exactly what my drive line shop told me to do, its alot cheaper than having one made. you will need a cross joint for the driveshaft either way it goes. if you have your stock driveshaft cut youll need the cross joint for the tranny yoke, or if you get the 1500 drive shaft youll need the crossjoint for the rearend yoke the driveshaft place will have what you need. its just a u joint with different dimensions

That is the short tail shaft - I have the same. Best idea by far in my opinion is what big al 71 said: get all the measurements from the form on the previously linked webpage (be exact!), and take it to a driveshaft shop. They can usually make them new for under $250. If you need to, they can shorten an existing (like 70clone is talking about) or swap out yokes for less than that. Either way, make sure you get new ujoints, no matter how good they may look, and if you do use a 2 piece, get the center bearing replaced, and get the whole unit balanced. If you have a strong motor, more than about 400HP, you should consider a 1 piece shaft or strong aftermarket carrier bearing for your 2 piece.

Re: What drive shaft after you swap to TH400?

Don't measure from the end of the yoke. Measure from the center of the yoke....the hole where the cap of the u-joint goes. Then, measure to the center of the yoke on the rear end, again the center of the hole or on a plane where the rear u-joint is placed and bolted down. You should be sure that the front yoke is not bottomed-out in the tailshaft housing. If it's the old yoke, you should be able to easily see how far into the tailshaft housing the yoke would be. Doing it this way will tell you what length you need, whether you have a long or short tailshaft housing.
