Exclamation steering going crazy.........

on my 79 GMC,the steering wheel used to be nice and straight, horizontally, now its straight up and down, vertically!! Can there be an issue with the steering box itself?? Is there an adjustment that I can make on the box?? Also noticed that when making a right hand turn, it doesn't cut as much anymore, it makes turn a little wider than before. Thats why im thinking it could be the steering box. Could it be worn out and may just need to replace with a new one??

Re: steering going crazy.........

check the mounting bolts... then check for cracks in the frame around the steering box... im going to fix the crack in my frame that gives me a half a turn of steering wheel play

Re: steering going crazy.........

Check the steering box bolts, while your there make sure the frame is not cracked by the box (very common). Throw it up on some jack stands and have someone turn the wheel as you look for slop in tie rod ends, idler arm, center link etc.

Re: steering going crazy.........

Like Powerdriver said. Check your rear axle. Make sure both sides are perpendicular (90º) to the drive shaft. Or, have someone follow you and see if you are "Crabbing" or "Dog Tracking". The center pin, mentioned above, helps keep the axle in the center of the rear spring pack - they can, over time, break or they end up like this...

You can get the pins at a local spring shop.
