I am wondering what's the best plug to run in my tired dog. I am building new motor, but I need this thing running better in the meantime. It's running ok, but seems to be using very very much gas. I mean a lot considering how far I have driven it. It's an old 327. Does anyone know where thes liked to be timed. I have a quadrajet carb and HEI. I just think I have plug issues that could be contributing to this. I don't know if they should be hot or cold plug. I am getting mixed information.

Tired motor, little blow-by, no white smoke from tailpipes, runs good. Idles poor. Have to drop her in drive at stop light sometimes not because it will shut off, but because you know it shoudl be idling better. A friend of mine thinks the motor is good, but I suspect it's tired.

what size is the carb? sounds like it might be running abit rich or needs a tune up

how old are the plugs/wires/cap/rotor?? whats the timing set at? fuel filter been changed recently?

quadrajet carb, new cap wires plugs, vac advance module. Dist was used.

I believe between 6-8 initial. The carb shop set it for me.

So, how many miles on the clock? My 350 is the original block and the odometer shows 11K. It could be 111, or 211K for all I know. The heads are later. My engine has some blow-by. Is mine tired? It's got some issues, I'm sure. Like I said, blow-by, leaks oil from rear main. I would like a crate engine. I have several people who want my engine. Maybe I should re-think, huh?

I'd run a compression test, to let you know "stuff".

As for plugs, my engine is running AC RapidFire. It used to gas-foul plugs when I had an Edelbrock 1405 on it, with an adapter to fit the carb to a Q-Jet manifold. I now have an Edelbrock 1901 on an Edelbrock Performer intake. The mixture is a lot leaner with the new carb/manifold. The old HEI that was from a junkyard died, and I replace it with an ACCEL HEI, that is a reman unit with their name.

My thinking is that you get the fire right, and the carb right, and it will be a good engine. If it ain't knocking, and the compression is good, you should be good-to-go.

Yeah I think a compression check is in line next. It's weird because the trucks runs good, idles good in park, it's just when I'm sitting at the light. I just had a guy tellme yesterday there was nothing wring with it. He was just listening to it run after working on some other things. I have another mechanig tell me it's tired. No way to really know than doing compression test.
