1972 Aux fuel tanks

I have a 1972 C20 Custom camper with twin spare tanks. The fillers are behind Doors, forward of the rear wheels. They were dealer installed but do not show on the RPO sticker in the glove box. Ant idea where there is a breakdown of what the code intails?? It does show code Z81 Custom camper equipment and code UY1 Camper wiring but nothing for Aux. Tanks??

Re: !972 Aux fuel tanks

Hi and welcome to the site. Those tanks are aftermarket, many were dealer installed.`72 was the only year for an auxilary tank option and those are only on the driver side. The filler comes through the same bodyline as factory fillers.I`ll find a picture...

Re: !972 Aux fuel tanks

Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here. I will post some pictures we I have a bit more time. The truck has been in the family since it was new and I will check around and see if I can find out when/how they were actually installed. I went on a camping trip in when it was new and I was 10 and remember having to fill those tanks, all three of them, when we stopped for gas. Another question I have is about the aftermarket A/C that was added to it a couple of years later. Is it better to leave it on the truck or remove it. Thanks again!!

Re: !972 Aux fuel tanks

I check my 1971 GMC because I also have the dealer installed dual saddle tanks with the filler tubes under the rear wheel well. The glove compartment doesn't list a code for additional tanks. I check the original sales invoice and it shows the saddle tanks were and additional accessory from the GMC dealer ($100.00 for both). It would probably only list it on the glovebox if it was installed at the factory versus the dealer. I'm sure if it is different someone here will know though

Re: !972 Aux fuel tanks

Yeah,only`72s had an auxilary tank option. There was an active GM accessory program which included auxilary tanks.
That`s cool your truck is an hierloom with memories.
I would leave the a/c is intact. If non-working I`d probably leave it untless it became a problem or I needed access and it was in the way.

Re: 1972 Aux fuel tanks

My Uncle who lived in California bought it new in 1972 and my Dad bought it from him in 1989. I was serving in the US Navy and stationed in San Diego at the time and drove it home for him on leave that year. I have since retired from the USN and have been bugging him for a few years to sell it to me. It had 64K on it when I drove it home and he used it very little it now has 72k on it and I plan on doing a restoration on it since I got him to sell it to me finally.. Thanks for the replies....USN Retired!

my 72 parts truck has an aux fuel tank, and the filler comes out of the wheel well. i just figured it was a dealer install.
