how to remove wire back up light?

I got the brake light figured out, but not the back up light. It has a green wire on drivers side. Is there a trick or am I just not seeing something?

I can't make sense out of the question. What is it you want to know?

Re: how to remove wire back up light?

I want to remove the wire that the bulb attaches to. The wire that attaches to the housing that has the lense cover. The brake light wire just unclipped from its housing but not the back up light.

Re: how to remove wire back up light?

I'll go look. I was going to suggest some wire cutters and yank the other end but didn't think that was what you wanted to know.

Seems I was right
You'll have to push the connector assy. through, cut the crimped connector and pull the spring and housing off the end. I don't know where you will find another connector to crimp on there when replacing though.

Re: how to remove wire back up light?

Thanks for the response. I was looking and looking and just could not figure it out. It seems like there has to be a way to do it. Everything else on the truck is able to come apart, but not this? I was thinking cut it, but would really like to find a way without damaging it.

I didn't try this but if the rubber is still pliable, pull the spring out and try to squeeze it trough the hole. There should be some room without the spring in there.

Re: how to remove wire back up light?

Here is the correct method.

1. Remove tailight housing from end of bed.
2. Reach in and grab the light green wire that goes to the backup housing. It should be accessible with the lower tailigh housing removed.
3. Pull it out until you can access the rubber boot that joints the housing's harness to the tailight wiring harness.
4. Separate at that boot by pulling it apart. You may find that after 40 years the rubber is hard and stiff, so you may have to really tug on it.

DO NOT CUT THE WIRE OR TERMINAL!Do what the previous poster said.
There is a weather-tight connecter right behind the taillight housing for the backup light. (Green Wire). Seperate the rubber boots and you are good to yank the B/U light housing.

Don't I know it... Could not figure out how it came apart. Cut the wire, pulled it out and was like Doh! Pulled the connector apart on the other side.

Hey, someone else in san diego. Where abouts are you? Do you know of any good shops or places around that relate to our trucks?

nac593, didn't mean to lead you astray. The knowledge available on this board is amazing.

Thanks guys, I learned something new today. (flashback to 5 years old and wondering how that Mickey Mouse phone worked...keyword, "worked")

I haven't gotten that far into my rebuild yet so I can avoid at least one hack into the wiring. The other "hack" will be holding the cutters

Re: how to remove wire back up light?

I wouldn't have ever attempted all the things I've done to my truck, without all the people on this site. I learn every time I check it out. Thanks everybody.
