Rusty tailgate work
I have 2 fleet gate I'm making into one. The one that looks less abused is actually the worst, the one from the 71. The bottom half of it had been rusted out and bondo put on top of that. I have the one from the 72 that is a little beat up but solid I'm using as a donor. I won't have time to work on it tomorrow because I have to go to a continuing education class. I went to the welding supply store and bought everything that it takes to convert my weld pack 100 flux core welder to a shielded mig running .023 wire for body panels. I'll get the internals Wednesday with the rest of the stuff I ordered for the 68 not long after that.

Re: Rusty tailgate work
I bought some weld through primer for when I plug weld it back together. I have a lot of metal working to get the orange (72) inside donor piece straight. It looks like the devil but it's solid. I also got some light weight filler, slick sand and high build primer to make things smooth. I'll post up more pics as I get more done.

Re: Rusty tailgate work
How are you planning on matching up the bottom....there's not an available patch is there?

Re: Rusty tailgate work
The 3rd pic is when I laid the rusty portion over the good donor. I scribed the line allowing for some room for welding. I have to re-radius the bottom edge to go around the "end caps" plug welding as I go. I am using both the outsude and inside lower portions of the orange gate on the bottom of the brown gate. There is no available patch out there I know of. I just didn't want to run a re pop gate or pay for a really nice survivor. I had these two on parts trucks so I decided to put them together.

Re: Rusty tailgate work
Thanks for the info...I see it now...was hoping there was something out there. I have two gates...but both have the bottom rotted out.

Re: Rusty tailgate work
When I was building my K10 (12ish yrs ago) you could buy patches for the bottom of tailgates. It seems like I got mine from a place in PA called Raybuck? I haven't seen any sold in years..don't know why...seems like a part that lots of people could use.
