exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
So I put the engine in my 70 C-20 project today. The engine is a 2005 5.3 from a Silverado. I was able to squeeze the drivers side manifold back on but it looks like the only way to run the passenger side is to notch the frame. Is that what you did, or is there a source for a good set of not $500 headers that fit this install?
Thanks, Orlando

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
What engine mounts did you use? A set of 98 Fbody manifolds work extremely well with the ECE brackets. Or you could buy a set of Dough Thorley Headers and they work with ECE, CPP, S&P mounts. Check my suburban build thread for more information in the DT headers.

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
I should of mentioned that. I used the ECE (Early Classic) motor mounts, I really liked the look of them, and they didn't disappoint when they arrived. Are those headers somewhat affordable? I just worry about spending $500 + on just a set of headers, when I never spent more then 100 on a set.

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
*Rumor* has it that Z06 manifolds will work. Not my experience at all just what I remember from a past thread. Might be worth a shot versus the large coin for the Thorley set.
... If the Z06 manifolds work please let me know ![]()

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
Pillow,
I will let you know, I started looking around and there is a local guy selling a set of '02 manifolds off of a WS6 that should fit, they look like the other f-body manifolds (the second set) that are in Rob's Suburban thread. I also found a set of GTO LS1 manifolds, they look similar to the Z06 style in Rob's thread, and I may get those as well, $50 shipped. Orlando

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
Rob,
Don't get me wrong, I love the headers, I just don't understand why they need to cost $350 more then regular small block headers. I just have a hard time paying that much. I am probably going to get some used manifolds (heck, I can buy 2 or 3 sets for $150) and play around with what will work on each side. Orlando

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
Rob,
So true, swapping headers is nothing compared to the entire swap. As for the needing headers for modified motors Lowriden, I plan on keeping this motor stock, so the whole need them for more performance thing is out the window there. This is my work/farm truck. Now, when I build my next "fun" project, and I go with LS intake, etc, etc, then I will get headers like that. Orlando

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
I just notched my frame a bit to use the stock manifolds and collectors. If its just a work truck expecially. I know what you mean about the pricy headers it is on my list of things to do to my truck, but I figure by the time I get the headers, MSD wires, Locar dip stick and rerun all my exhaust It will be close to a grand to do the swap, so they will wait for now.

Re: exhaust manifolds on a 5.3?
Well,
I just won the GTO manifolds for 57 bux. Seems worth it, I can always re-sell them. Here they are, they look a LOT like the Z06 ones in Rob's thread. Link removed, the link doesn't work unless I go from my won page. I snagged a pic of them off the page... ![]() David, I know what you mean, but I already notched it where the A/C is, and am trying to find a cheaper way to keep it from needing more notching.
