4spd steering column

i am about to convert my truck from an automatic to a 4spd in the floor and was wondering if on the steering column if i would be able to disconnect the shifting linkages and then take the collar where the automatic shifter handle sticks put and cut the piece off and then patch it with a small piece of metal and repaint it to make it smooth if anybody has ever done this would you please post pics if you have any.

All you need is that colar that has the shifter on it....get that same piece off of a 4 speed truck. It'll slip right on and no more shifter nub.
