dana 44 HYDRA-LOK ?????
off topic for sure but curious if anyone has any experience with this set up. we are putting new bearings on the pinion and carrier in the rear differential of an 01 jeep grand cherokee. i tore it down yesterday and noticed a wierd tin plate on the driver side of the carrier with a couple of small ears and a small wing on it. i was cleaning it in the parts washer when i noticed the plate would rotate. i flipped it over and saw the words HYDRA-LOK cast into it. there is a series of holes in the carrier under the plate and i assume it acts as a hydraulic locking device???? the differential is an aluminum center dana 44. anyone know how it works or if it would work in the front 44 in our trucks??? first one i've ever seen.

Re: dana 44 HYDRA-LOK ?????
Tim,
our head mechanic did a little research on this thing and the tin plate is actually two pieces and the wing act as a pickup tube for the gear oil. there is a hole in the reverse side of the plate and it feeds oil to the holes in the carrier assembly.

Re: dana 44 HYDRA-LOK ?????
Yeah we see those from time to time in our shop... Jeep used them on the front and rear of many Grad Cherokees. Then there is a certain amount of wheel spin, the spinning side literally acts like an oil pump and hydraulically locks up, similar to a torque converter when it stalls... They actually work very well for a street driven differential

Oh and Aluminum 44's from WJ's are a unique beast...not the same carrier as other 44's
