Carrier bearing
Anyone know where a guy can buy a carrier bearing for
a 1/2 ton fleetside 1970 GMC. It is different then the one I have on my 1/2 ton 1970 chevy truck.

Do have a pic of the style you need? Is it like the 3/4 ton chevy carrier?

No photo it is for a coworker, but it doesnt look like a 1/2 ton .
It has two stamped steel plates bolted together around the bearing. Could he maybe have a 3/4 ton bearing on the truck??

I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago, to the best of my knowledge, they used the same two for about 30 years or so.
The one that went on my truck looked like this: |

The other one looked like this, and they both were used from 1947 to 1991. I don't know if there were any other variations used during this time. - Ted

Dano, did you replly before I put the second pic up? The bolts in it do look about 5 or 6 inches apart. You may have to turn your monitor upside down in order to get a good look.

There are steel plates that cover the bearing on either side, and the bolt holes are farther apart!
I will post a photo tomorrow!!

I am running the style in the 2nd pic on my longhorn, but its not original. The orig was sandwiched tween 2 pcs of stamped steel that were bolted together, & had 4 bolts to bolt to the crossmember.......crazyL

Hey crazy,
Did you have to modify anything, or was it a direct swap out??

When I bought my carrier bearing they wanted me to bring mine down to the shop to see which one I had. They claimed there were 6 different chevy/GMC designs for that time frame and that they needed to see which one I had before they'd sell me one. I had the second type as pictured with the 2 holes on the bottom flange.

The front half of the shaft is from a 75 chevy van(shortened), & the rear half is from a 67 ford pick up(both pcs balanced as an assy) the crossmember is also not stock.........so i couldnt really say how that bearing would work on the stock shaft. sorry, i know that wasnt much help.....

Dano NAPA & GM both used to stock the 3rd style you described sandwiched between the plates.
