Well, now I’m not sure what I have. First and most importantly, it’s definitely the 292…YES. But, I’m not sure if this truck was a GMC or a Chevy now because the engine, tranny and transfer case are all original orange paint. I read somewhere (I think on this site) that the GMC engines were usually blue. Also, I could NOT find a VIN plate anywhere on this frame, and I checked everywhere like 5 times. So now I’m not even sure if the guy I bought this chassis from was correct telling me it’s a 1967 GMC.

I do have pics but can’t upload until tomorrow but I do have all the numbers off the engine, intake, tranny and transfer case:

Engine (these numbers are on passenger side of block): C0N 2 E51 3994258
Intake: 3923418 GM 28
Top of Tranny: 3901131 D88 GM2
Side of Tranny: 3901127 D288 GM2
Transfer Case: Rockwell Standard Corp.
Model: T-221 N3
Ratio: 1.94
Serial No: 12 67-0 34

So, what do you guys think? Did I make a score or is this stuff not that good?

There is not a VIN plate. It is just a stamping into the steel. Check along the top of the frame. I have found it by the steering box and down where the cab would be. You may not see it until you have cleaned up the frame a bit.

Front diff is a Dana 44, rear diff is a Corporate 12 bolt. Engine is a 292, transmission is an SM420. T-case is a T-221

The drivetrain is pretty much bulletproof. The 292 is a pretty powerful engine, I've got one in a 63 GMC 2.5 ton out at the farm and it pulls very well when loaded to the gills. The SM420 is similar to the newer SM465, but has a much deeper first gear. I don't have much experience with the Rockwell t-cases, but my understanding is that they are incredibly beefy. The low range is kind of poor on it though.

Based on the drive line, I'd suspect that the truck is late 60s as your PO suggested. The VIN will be stamped into the frame somewhere, there is no vin plate on a frame. I've found it on the pass side on the outside face, driver's on the top of the rail, beside the power steering box, and below the rail on the pass side below the cab.

Right on top.

A drill with a wire wheel will reveal it.

Thanks a ton everyone! I'm assuming this was an outstanding buy for only $500? I'm assuming the gears in the truck were rather low but my brother seems to think they are higher, above 4. Anyone have any ideas or will I have to pull both covers and try to figure out what gears are in this beast?

Last year for the SM420 4 speed was 67 IIRC. Carb looks to be a later model (68-up) Rochester 1bbl

The frame wont have a bump for power steering box. That is the tranny my 67 C30 has, I was looking under the truck for the first time yesterday and though, that don't look like a saginaw, what the hell is it. Now I know!

Oh and the tranny is a 67 because it was the first and only year that the sm420 had the backup light switch and wiring

Ok, so now you guys have solidified that it's a 67, but is there anything that you guys can see that will declare if it's a Chevrolet or GMC?

Here are your options there:

1. Find VIN if it exists in area Fine69 circled. Should start with KS (K=4x4, S=six cylinder) if there. Again GMC vins are not as easy to deipher as chevy's, so I may not follow this convention.
2. Did GMC offer a 292 in 67? Probably but I'm not positive on this. If not, I'd assume you have a chevy.

Where did you buy this? Doesn't MA require titles, or did you buy it as salvage parts? I ask because in NH, I could just find a cab and register it using the Cab's VIN plate irregardless of the frame underneath. We just built a 70 Chevy K20, and put a 68 GMC nose on it. I guess I'm asking, does it really matter all said and done?

I originally bought this to just make a replica of my dad's truck when I was a kid. It was my brother who talked me into keeping this vehicle as original as possible. Now that I know it's a 292 and if it is a 67 GMC I would like to restore it to it's original specs. If it's a Chevy, then I will move forward with my original plan and make it into a 69 Chevy replica like my dads and just find a body for it and use that VIN for registration purposes. I'm positive that now I'll find exactly where the VIN is. But I won't see it again until the 24th.

the engine would be orange. i believe that the earlier GMC's were a different color but in 67-72 they were all orange

If there is a little metal tag on one of the diff cover bolts then it will have the ratio.... If not then pull a cover and look at the ring gear... there will be a ratio (i.e. 41:11 = 41 divided by 11 which is 3.72727272 or 3.73)

Don't know about engine colors...

take that sucker to a sandblaster and start building...
