Pertronix ignition kit
I have Pertronix ignition kit (1181) and was wondering about the measurements they provide. I have the measurements correct when the distributor is down but when I push it up like they say the measurement calls for shims that they provide. The gap cannot go over .060 and mine does when the distributor is pushed up. I have to take the bottom gear off to put in the shims.
Two questions. First is it that important for the measurement to be that precise? If so how is the bottom gear taken off. Do I remove the pin and then use a gear puller? I put a Pertronix in my 64 Corvair 6cylinder and did not have to do all this measuring. |

I'm not sure why you would need to do all that messing around, but I believe you can use a punch to knock the pin out of the bottom of that gear and the gear should slide off.

Re: Pertronix ignition kit
I have installed several of these units and like them. The clearance is important so the magnetic pickup ( the thing that bolts where the points were) and the reluctor ( the thing you bolt to the distributor shaft ) are able to read each other. This is a neat system and is a hall effect type electronic ignition. Some of the OE boys used this kind of thing in the 70's. If you get the clearance clse you will be ok.
Yes you need a small center punch to drive the roll pin out of the gear, and the gear will wiggle off. Take you time pulling the distributor shaft out. Sometimes they can have build up on them and not want to come all they way out. A bit of WD 40 on the shaft, and work it in and out and you will be fine. Me and my guys have probably done 20 + Pertronix installs, and have yet to see one comeback. I would recommend a new coil. Have seen a few coils fail right after startup. |

Re: Pertronix ignition kit
These are great systems. I have one on my bb and it works great. IT really beats the stock points and you can't tell it is even there (stock resto). I have a Crane unit for my 4x4 just because it came with a rev limiter built into it. I have not tried it yet but anticipate the sme type of results as the pertronix unit.
