I know of the whole Zinc issue, but besides Royal Purple (expensive), what else is there that's a good bang for the buck? Doing an oil change on the CST10 this weekend.

Amsoil...but it costs just as much.

Just pick up a pint of GM EOS and put 1/2 the bottle in with your oil change

I am running

Valvoline VR1 Racing 20w50

. Its only 3.89 a quart at AutoZone. Half the price of Royal Purple and it is high in ZINC. It is the oil that was recommended to me by the Drivers at the local race track where I live.

I also run Valvoline VR1 in my '68. I just go down to Napa and have them order me a case of 10w-30, still not the cheapest but I've found it to be the best route as far as price and availability.

most of the diesel oils have less zink in them than the gas oils now.

ok, i agree with that for passenger vehicles for emissions reasons, but what about for big-rigs?

You may want to check out zddp plus oil additive, it has very high concentration of zinc and phosphorous... I just got 3 cans but haven't used it yet. I am going to use it in the engine that I built recently but haven't fired it up yet.

big rigs are having emissions issues too, they are getting very strict on them last few years.
On gas engines, it wasn't so much for emissions, the ash produced as the zink would burn off was clogging cattilitic converters and clogging them. The auto makers have been askin the feds for 15 - 20 years to get rid of the zink

I hate to brag,

But here in Colorado they repealed emissions on passenger cars and trucks last year because our air is so clean. With the new administration and more Dems in our local governments that may change soon, but for now we don't have to pass inspection or emission tests.

I hear lubri-plate 30W is the highest in Zinc content as it is mostly marketed as air compressor oil . VR-1 is my choice , but i have all roller cams . I agree with the GM EOS at oil changes .

Good thing is my dad works at a Cadi dealership and that's where I'm tidying up the truck in the underside, and oil change and inspection and such. Might get the EOS for free.

use 4 qts of a good oil and a qt of lucas. that stuff is GREAT. we also used to run it in the rear end of our racecar and after a race you could lay your hand on the diff
