I ran valvoline durablend (synthetic blend) in my '86 for a few years then switched to Valvoline fully synthetic, then gave royal purple a try. For my money, i'd go back to durablend or valvoline fully synthetic. I did not have any problems with royal purple, im just not convinced it's worth $8/quart.
That and a good PF35L, high effiency ac delco filter or a K&N performance gold oil filter.

I use Castrol, but if you change your oil regularly, I think any oil would be fine. I had a 400 that had 200k+ on it. I drove back and forth from Bing to Ottawa, put 60k on the motor before I left. The motor was a sludgepit on the inside. Changed the oil roughly 3k, and when I tore the engine apart, it was virtually spotless. I think any oil is fine, I kinda think they are all the same just different color bottle. Never used synthetic and dont' plan to.

205K on my DD 83 305, Run 10/30 Pennz High Mileage with a FRAM 2 qt filter and have been running this since day 1
