Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

What is the best way to get this done? I have access to a cordless drill and that is about it. Please, give me some tips/ideas.

Drill a 1/4" hole through the center of the rivet take a sharp cold chisel and a big hammer and knock the head of the rivet off.

Great idea! I can say, based on my experience, using just the cold chisel and hammer doesn't work.

Re: Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

I am going to try it at home on my 4wd brackets to see how it works. I hope to find a 2wd with the bed removed so it will be easier.

Re: Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

Is there a difference between 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton brackets for 2wd?

Rear spring brackets, I found out. I looked under a 2wd that was at a resale lot.

Re: Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

what are you trying to take off? Can you just cut the piece you don't need with a cordless sawzall and remove the rest when you get home?

Re: Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

There are at least 4 rivets per bracket. If I recall correctly, my '77 with heavy duty springs had 6 rivets per bracket on the front. So that means 16 to 20 rivets you will need to bust. Make sure you take at least 2 brand new titanium drill bits and a couple of extra battery packs for that cordless drill. I hope it's at least an 18V drill too. Sounds like more than a couple hours of work to me.

I think Rusty C10 has the better idea. Pay them a few bucks extra to drag a torch out there and burn them off.

Re: Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

I will try and get them to torch them off. But if that don't happen then I will have to drill them and hammer them out. I am going to try it at home first to see how long it will take. I also have access to a cordless sawzall.

Re: Removing rivets at the pull-a-part

Are you going to the pullapart in duluth or down on moreland ave?

Let me know if you see any good trucks left down there, I may have to make a trip myself if there are. I need a new red sun visor from an 88-91 burban and maybe some seatbelts.

Just cut the frame with a sawzall then remove the rivets at home. It will save you a few days of frustration.
