Carrier bearing help
How do I remove the carrier bearing from my truck, I need to remove the entire drive-shaft?
Any information would be great!!

You do need to remove the whole shaft. I had mine replaced at the drive line shop so that they could also rebalance it when they got done putting in the new center carrier.

It's really easy, just pop loose rear u joint, unbolt carrier, then everything just slides out. Not bad at all. Go for it!

I did mine in my 66 and replaced all of the u-joints at the same time. It helps if you have a press or some other creative way to seperate the carrier from the driveshaft. Total time invested was about 3 hours. I have a two piece driveshaft in the longbed.

Hmmm, well mine was easy but now after reading a little more on the search I am wondering why everyone was using hammers and presses or taking to driveline shop. Maybe there are two different types or I need to go take a look at mine

it's supposed to be a pressed fit.
I highly recomend taking it to a drifeline shop. Depending on gearing, that shaft spins between 2500 - 3500 RPM just doing 60 MPH. Good idea to have it done right, and balanced too. |

My wife says I used a pipe to slide over and hammered it on. She remembers cause I was cussin' the old one off. Maybe I repressed those memories.

I have a press, I might give it a shot taking it off. Does the front of the shaft just pull off of the trans or does that need to be unbolteds too?

undo the rear u bolts then on top of the carrier bearing there are two bolts that hook to the frame remove them and the the driveshaft will come out then u have to remove the center u joint from the front shaft if you have a press that makes it easy i just use a hammer and a socket.( people are prolly gonna say you arent suppose to do them that way but ive been doin it that way since i was thirteen) now that u have the front shaft seperated from the rear shaft you will have to remove the 3/4 in bolt. once the bolt is removed you can slide the half yoke away from the carrier bearing. then you can remove whats left of the rubber around the bearingthat part usually falls off but if not just tap it with a hammer. once that is done u will have just a bearing there now if you have a press you can just put something under the bearing and just press the driveshaft out but if your like me youll use a tall jackstand and a hammer (take the bolt that came out of the driveshaft go to lowes match it up and get another bolt) screw the new bolt into the driveshaft take the driveshaft over to the jackstand set the edge of the bearing on the edge of the jackstand. this is where you have to concentrate grab your hammer!!! hit the bolt deadon spin the drive shaft 180 degrees and hit it again. usually by the second lick the bearing comes off if not keep whacking it till it comes off. in the process your going to mushroom the bolt head. i usually just beat an old cheap 3/4 inck socket onto the bolt and take it off with an impact gun. now that you have the bearing removed slide the new one one install the halfshaft exactly where it was when you took it off meaning the ujoint caps should line up the insert the factory bolt and washer and zip it down with an impact. this takes a matter of 20 min it actually took me longer to write this up than to do the job. and to you haters out there keep takin your stuff to the shop and shelling out the money because the driveshaft man has a family to feed to. but me i like feeding my family and it helps when you can do it yourself.

i started this whole process at 215 in the mornind and finished it 252 including the write up. its not hard at all i did this write up only to show people that it can be done without a press ive done this prolly 50 times and have never had a problem i run a mobile auto repair business its kinda hard to lug a press around. if you can change a tire you should be able to do this. a press is the right way to do this job, but this is the cost efficient way to do this job.

So I ended up taking my drive shaft in to a shop to have the carrier bearing removed.
I just don't see how to remove the bearing with a hammer and not tear something up. It was only $40 to have the old one taken off and the new one put on.... mine cost a little more, the splines were twisted and cracked by the carrier bearing. To have the shaft rebuilt (cut & welded) new crrier bearing pressed on, new u-joints pressed in and balanced it was $150. Damn Longhorn....... you were right AGAIN!!!
