ponder this idea
i was thinking, they dont make a 1 piece window mod kit for our trucks because of the curved glass right. well i was SHOPPING today at my buddy's wrecking yard and was looking at a suburban , same year as our trucks. why cant we take the back windows (long ones on the rear) and have them cut to fit as a 1 piece.
it maybe to short, i dont know i didnt measure it but it sure seems like it was curved about the same as the front windows. is this an idea or just a meer whim and wont work. what do yall think. a glass co. should be able to cut it if you have a template right. well it was just a thought.

Im not shure about the lenght and even if it's long enough it still wont work cuz you cant cut tempered safety glass.

Yeah unless a new process has come out.
But a few years ago i was looking into this mod and went to an auto glass shop and asked about having a piece cut and that's what i was told it can't be drilled either |

Is front windshield glass considered 'tempered safety glass' ? If so, I know of @ least one truck thats had the windshield cut down for a chop-top w/o breaking.
I know it didn't work on the first try, but the guy was willing to pay & they got it right on the second if my memory serves me correctly.

I have had the same idea also. Even if the glass could be cut it most likely would not be tall enough. It is only as tall as the opening and would need to be just a little taller.

Windsheilds are not tempered. They are saftey glass. I know you've seen them broken and they sort of stay together. Not sure about the back glass but the sides are tempered. A tempered glass will shatter into a million pieces when it breaks.
I forgot to mention, they do this on purpose. You need some way of escaping if you can't open the doors.

I know the tempered glass all to well. I used to cut glass and people would bring in glass from old storm doors to be cut down for a window. I learned real wuick what was tempered and what was not. Like everyone said before you cannot sut safety or tempered glass.
One solution I know of is Plexiglass. It can be trimmed down, drilled, etc. Very easy to work with and easily trimmed. One thing though is it scratches easy. But anything is possible.

I also know all too well about tempered glass. I was once installing a glass shower door, which are temepered for saftey reasons as you know. This door was around 700 bucks, before I forget. I was finishing up and had one more little tiny piece of plastic to put in at the bottom corner of the metal track where the glass fit in. I was done. You had to peck in it with a hammer. Well, I had to peck it one more time, just had to you know? Picture this. I'm bent over pecking on the bottom of the metal door frame and all of a sudden, BOOM. Sounded like a shotgun went off. Glass goes all down my pants and all over the floor. It took me 30 minutes to get all the tiny pieces of glass up. It was a damn mess, not to mention I wasted $700.00.

I know that feeling. We delivered some windows insulated double glass 3' wide and 8' tall. Then we had to take 2 and piece them together. Why someone wants a window section this big blows my mind!! Well we were drilling holes and doing fine until the last one and yeah you guessed it. Went to set it straight up (we here mounting while laying down on side) and it got away from us and both of us bailed and WHAM!!! The boss was not happy at all on that one.

safety glass can be cut (as in Chopped windshields) those long rear windows ARE safety glass and NOT tempered. There Was a cracked one in the burb I just sold . so measure them up:-) .DAVE

The rear glass on Suburbans are too short. The glass must extend past the window opening on top and bottom of opening, the glass in the rear is smaller than the opening for the seal to hold it in.

Chris are you going to let us all know before the mold goes off to a glass company? Im sure you could get a few guys here to order some glass and even make a buck or two. I might be interested in 2 of each side, that way Id have a back up incase some @$$hole decides to brake one.

Capt, at the rate you get things done, we'll never see the one piece glass in our lifetime.
Let's see, if I remember correctly, when you started tearing Su down, you told me you would have it ready for the PF show the next year. Yeah right. Just had to do it. Nothing like a good natured ribbing, right?
