Hey guys quick question, i found a 69 chevy 1 ton with a ramp bed on it that im trying to go pick up this weekend... going to be able to get it for what i think is a steal. but my problem is its not currently running, and i need to know the wheel base to plan on a trailer! the only trailer i have is an 8 foot and im not sure if that would allow to get both wheels on there or not. so my question is what is the wheelbase on say a 69 1 ton? thanks!

with a ramp bed it could be anything only way to b sure is with tape measure

The service manual shows 133 and157 for the c-30 conventional cab

uh, is your trailer...8 ft LONG? I think it will be a little too short to haul a truck with a wheel base 11 or 13 ft. it will take a AT LEAST a 16' trailer, and unless it is a car hauler or flat bed trailer, your problem will the width. How far do you have to go? A tow bar would be my recommendation if it is close and not freeway, etc. I have a tow bar that originally came from Uhaul that I used to bring a 65 1 ton winch truck home from my uncle's like this. I picked up some magnetic tow lights from Harbor Freight for $10 (!). Take it SLOW!!!

thats what i figured, there was no way an 8 foot trailer would do it. i have to make about a 45 minute drive with it. im going to do some looking to see if i cant borrow a trailer. thanks for your help guys.

Yeah, it is either a 133" or 157". If you post a pic I can tell you. I would try to fix it before getting a trailer, it could just need something small to run. Good luck.

I hauled my 65,C-30 on a 14' trailer.It barely fit and mine is the shorter frame.If yours' is the 157",you will need an 18' trailer minimum.If it's a steel bed,you will have lot of weight behind the axels which is dangerous!Fishtailing!
Also,the front axel/tires will not go between the fenders/tires on many trailers.Measure first!
You need at least a 3/4 ton truck to pull it.
If the brakes work,you could tow it with a chain,but this is dangerous also unless you and the other driver are really good.

we've got it figured out the guy is delivering it to me. its not a little fix, it needs an engine but im picking it up for next to scrap price and the engine deal doesnt concern me, i have a 383 im not using which i may use but i have big dreams of putting a 6.0 that i also have sitting for the right project into it. i will post pics as soon as i get it. havent searched the board yet. but any good threads about 1 ton trucks out there?! thanks guys. will post pics as soon as its here.

tow bars are fun! If you know how to use one, there's no reason NOT to use one on the freeway, i feel it's safer on the freeway than on the backroads myself, less turns and stops to make. I've logged MANY miles with a truck in tow on a tow bar.

Nothing wrong with a tow bar and freeways. I like the fact that the one I have a bar factory engineered, is adjustable and has safety chains. A vehicle that is towed often and is set up with tabs welded to the frame so that the bar can be pinned and unpinned is great too. My dad towed a jeep a lot like this. I only suggested not getting up to high speeds due to the fact that the tires on the truck might not stand up to high speeds and blow out.

tow bars dont typically scare me, have used them many number of times on small to mid size cars but i wasnt sure how a 1 ton truck would pull but at any rate the trucks home now and now when it warms up the fun will begin.

thanks jeff all in all it ended up costing me 300 bucks, i know its rust and rough but i couldnt pass it up for that.

I spent the first 7 years of my adult life towing 70 ton tanks with a 56 ton recovery vehicle in the army... As long as the driver knows what he/she is doing, and doesn't forget whats back there... you should have no problems at all.

one tons tow fine. Granted, the one in question weights a little more than mine does, but none the less. Here's my '70 one ton on a tow bar being pulled by longhorn jeff's '87 k/5 back in 2002.

I have an old U haul towbar and one time we towed 63 GMC6500 cab and chassis about 45 or 50 miles with my 61 Gmc3500. Worked fine no problems but in retrospect it was about 23 years ago so maybe I was just to young to know any better.LOL
