door lock question

Hey- new to this 72 truck and have a question about the door locks.

Both doors seem to only be locked with a key when leaving the truck – there away I can make it so when we push down on the lock and shut the door the door stays locked.

Like cdowns said. Locks with the key, unlocks with the key. No way to change it as far as I know....

Re: door lock question

Keeps you from getting locked out. My 69 also allows me to take the key out of the ignition while running.

Re: door lock question

My 56 is like that. but I use the original key

My 71 nova lets you lock the doors and then close them. yea I have learned to keep a spare hidden so though there was something wrong with the truck.

Re: door lock question

bignbad, I have the same deal unless I push in on the door while locking. It has to do with adjustment of the door. You might try searching the FAQ,I'm not sure if there's a write up on that or not.

While sitting in the truck you can reach across and push the door lock button down on the other door ,,then get out and lock the door you just got out of with a key and both will be locked..

They can be a pain in the ass. We just did this a few months ago. same problem then when we got it fixed the Key would not come out. We used a brand new OEM lock with the old latch and even replaced the latch with a new prepro and still had the problem. The key would just not turn the lock enough. We messed with it and so did others and we gave up. We would go back later and screw with it and finally the dumb thing started working and the key would come out. I think we messed with it for ovfer a week Then the customer wanted keyless entry installed

It's because the doors aren't shutting far enough and there is too much pressure on the latches. Set the strike out a little bit to take the pressure off of the latch.

Re: door lock question

I can't imagine the engineering would be impossible to make it work as GM and other auto manufacturers were producing door locks when our trucks were manufactured that you could lock, depress the button, close the door and have it remained locked. No aftermarket change for this has been produced as far as I know. I have heard this questioned asked before several times. Until that option appears, keep your keys handy and remember to push the passenger side lock button down before you get out.

Re: door lock question

I had a similar problem.

Then 1 day I was standing inside the open door, with the window down, & I realized I could see most of the locking mechanism.
I got me a can of WD-40 & just sprayed the crap outta everything I could see.
It's worked fine for a couple of years now.
