Need some advise on a complete rear end - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I went to the junk yard to look for a 70-71 rear end and housing with brakes. They wanted $450.00 for it. it has the coil spring mounts to bolt right up to my 63.

My question is, do you guys think that this is a too much. How much should I be looking to spend for a complete rear housing?

Unless it is a recently completely rebuilt limited slip differential, yes that is too much IMO. An average price on a used open diff should be in the $150 range. Although those diffs are getting harder to find. For that amount of money you could get a set of new 5 hole replacement axles plus the spider gears you would need.

Well, I was fortunate enough to find mine at a pick n' pull yard. Set me back around $120.00 without the drums. This was early last year - I'd check any local self service auto wrecker, the 71-72 trucks do turn up in the yards here in Nor-Cal quite frequently. If that's out of the question then I personally wouldn't pay anything over $200.00 as most of these are totally used up and in need of a full reconditioning (bearings shot, seals dry and leaking, posi unit burnt up, gears shot, etc...).

I ended up fully rebuilding mine with all new bearings and seals, I also took the time to rebuild the posi carrier with parts from Randy's Ring and Pinion as well as add later model (1975) heavy half ton brakes which included the backing plates, drums and shoes. I kept the total cost around $400.00 by doing the work myself.

Going to the salvage yard now is almost like going to the parts store price-wise.
I'd watch private party ads, the parts section of this site, craigslist etc.
If you can be patient, a deal will show up.

I got mine at Pick n Pull for $110. And it needs a yolk seal.

thanks for the help guys. just found out the pick and pull yard is going to have a 50% off sale next month. this is not the salvage yard I went to to get that price though. A friend told me he got a complete front Dana 44 front end for his F*** for 150.00 so i will go check it out.

Plus the Big 3 is coming up at the end of February here in San Diego.

I bought a 3.08 and a 3.73 for $150 for the pair but they didnt have the brakes.

I have one. I would like get 200 for it and the springs or 300 with the arms and springs.
